Is the Rapture the Second Coming of Christ? If not, how come there is only one resurrection of the righteous dead since Christ's resurrection and the end of the world, according to 1 Corinthians 15:20-25?

The difference between the Rapture and the second coming, is that during the Rapture, Jesus does not come back to earth. Those of us who have died in the faith will be risen out of their graves to meet Jesus in the air/clouds, then those of us who are still alive will be lifted up to meet Jesus in the air/clouds and will be taken up to be with him in Heaven.The only ones that will see Jesus at this time are the Christians who go to be with him. Then there will be a period of 7 years, considered the Tribulation Period. During that time people will have a chance to come to the faith, but most likely will be killed for it. After the 7 year tribulation period, Jesus will come back to earth with his saints (us), and every eye will see him. That is considered Jesus' second coming. He is coming to defeat Satan and his army and take back what is His.

The rapture of the church and the second coming of Christ must of necessity happen during the same event. The 'second coming' refers to Christ's return to the Earth, wheras the 'rapture' refers to the motion of believers - rising up to meet the returning Christ. The rapture as described in 1 Thess 4:16-18 is when all believers will join Christ in the clouds as he descends in view of the earth. This is not a rapture into heaven, rather, this is meeting Jesus "in the air" - greek 'aer' - the lower atmosphere where living things breath [trees, birds, people, etc]. 'Aer' encompasses the space from the surface of the ground to the lower clouds. [In contrast to the greek 'ouranos' (heaven), the first heaven being the upper atmopsphere, the second space, the "third heaven" God's heaven). As we are meeting Christ in the lower aer, then this is in full view of those on the planet. The greek word harpazo (to seize/snatch up) also refers to an overt action by force, such as robbery or seizing the spoils of war, vs. A secret action. Jesus used term "Resurrection" to refer to us receiving our glorified bodies, and never referred to a rapture. The term rapture is not in the Bible, and carries with it the differing definitions of many different theories of men, and so it is a far less accurate choice of words than "Resurrection/Second coming" to describe Christ's return and our Resurrection. The phrase "caught up" is used 4 times in the KJV. 2 Corinthians 12:2, 2 Corinthians 12:4, 1 Thessalonians 4:17 and Revelation 12:5. The phrase is defined as: I.to seize, carry off by force II.to seize on, claim for one's self eagerly III.to snatch out or away The biggest problem I see in denying the pre-tribulation rapture is that the event described in 1 Corinthians 15 and 1 Thessalonians 4 are consistent in the description, literally describing what is defined above. "to seize, claim for one's self, snatch out of the way". In this event believers are taken away "In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye". We will meet the Lord "in the air". According to Revelation 19, upon the Lord's physical return the saints will be coming with him. Revelation 19:14 "And the armies which were in heaven followed him upon white horses, clothed in fine linen, white and clean." Revelation 19:8 tells who is wearing the robes. Matthew 24:29 "Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken:" Revelation 1:7 "Behold, he cometh with clouds; and every eye shall see him, and they also which pierced him: and all kindreds of the earth shall wail because of him. Even so, Amen." In the first event believers are taken quickly, secretively meeting the Lord in the air. It is never stated that he touches down. In the second event we are coming with him and he physically touches down on the Mount of Olives. (Zechariah 14:4) To mix the two would be to suggest "we do not know if we are coming or going".

The word 'rapture' isn't anywhere in the Bible but many talk and preach about the 'Rapture'. It is _actually the Second Coming but refers to those of us still alive. 1 Thes: 4 16-17 explain it perfectly in that the 'dead' in Christ will rise first and _then those still living will be 'caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air' to be with Him forever, (Raptured). Think about it: What purpose would God have for a rapture? No church believed in or taught anything about a rapture before 1830. Paul told Timothy that the Lord would judge living and dead "at his appearing" (2 Tim 4:1). Not 1007 years later. The 1000 years in Rev. 20 is symbolic, like the beasts and bottomless pit. John said the book of Rev. Was symbolic in the 1st verse of the book. He also said these things would take place shortly, not 2000 years later. He mentioned that again in the last chapter. He didn't want to be misunderstood about the timing. (Rev 1:7) "He cometh with clouds; and every eye shall see him. People believing in rapture say the wicked will not see him. "The hour is coming, in which all… shall come forth; they that have done good… and they that have done evil" (Jn 5:28-29).There are no 2 resurrections. "Hour" suggests a point in time. John 6:44 says the good will be raised the last day (along with the wicked as we saw in Jn 5:28-29). John 12:48: Judgment will be that same last day. 2 Thess 1:6-10)…when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven…taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel….When he shall come…in that day." "… the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up.…the elements shall melt with fervent heat….be diligent that ye may be found …blameless" (2 Peter 3:10-14). Evidence that the Second Coming of Christ and the Rapture are on the same day is overwhelming in the Scripture. Whether you call it a Rapture or The Last Resurrection, they are the same event. The Rapture and The Last Day Resurrection are married and can never be separated. I’d like to begin by proving that “The Last Day Resurrection” is the end of the world and universe and the end of death and the end of time. I will start with 2 Pet 3. This is talking about the second coming of Christ and what is mentioned here proves that with His coming shall be the dissolving of the universe. 2 Pet 3:3,4 put the Scripture passage into its correct perspective. “Where is the promise of His coming"? Right here people were mocking the promise that Jesus would return by using the argument that the universe remains the same. This means that they must have heard someone preaching that when Christ came the universe would end. They were ignorant of one fact: the time frame was not revealed. No doubt in the language of the apostle Paul and of Peter they seem to feel it could happen any moment in their lifetime. This is what they expected on Christ’s return, the Judgment of the wicked (2 Pet 3:7) The heavens will disappear with a loud noise, the elements will melt with intense heat, everything in the earth and the earth itself will be burned up (2 Pet 3:10). The skeptics were declaring “Where is the promise of Christ’s coming because this has not happened yet. Peter answers them that with the certainty of that second coming will be the judgment and the heavens and earth passing away. Even if it is prolonged it certainly will happen. Note this vital truth Peter urges upon the Church of his day (2 Peter3:11). Knowing these things are about to be happen you better be living a holy life. He did not say “knowing these things you better be ready for a pre-tribulation Rapture”. Not at all! Knowing that with the Coming of Christ, which may happen in your lifetime you better be ready because with it comes judgment day. Peter said they are looking for these judgments mentioned above, (2 Pet 3:14) you need to “be diligent to be found in Him”. Why would one need to be diligent to be found in Christ? Because when He returns the door of hope is shut forever and there will be no second chance. The teaching of the marriage Supper of the Son and the 10 virgins reinforces that when this event happens, the horror of being shut out forever is graphically portrayed by those who weep and grind their teeth. Now to look at 1 Cor 15 let us find further proof that the one and only Second Coming of Christ will eliminate any idea of a pre-tribulation Rapture. The context of the chapter is that If Christ died and was raised again, the dead in Christ will also be raised again. When that resurrection occurs is vital to the subject at hand. In Adam all die, but those in Christ shall all be made alive or be resurrected to live forever with Him. Here it declares that all in Christ will be raised and that’s precisely why the apostle Peter warned the Christians to be found in Him. Why? Because if they are not diligent to be found in Him they will not be raised with the righteous dead, but they will be raised on the same day to be judged with the wicked. I want to focus on 1 Cor 15:23,24 because these Scriptures show when the resurrection of the righteous dead happens. This shows the order of the resurrection: Christ first, then they that are his at His coming. The only resurrection of the righteous dead in Christ is at the “Second Coming of Christ”. But please note what happens at the same time. 1 Cor 15:24 “then comes the end”. End of what? “The end comes with the last enemy being defeated and that enemy is death itself. There will be no more death after the return of Christ. Death and hell at the return of Christ will be cast forever into the lake of fire and its final defeat is on the second coming.

This may seem scary but consider the very structure of the scripture, use Daniel for an example before telling us about the end times He demonstrates His ability to provide, deliver and protect. I think many are confused with the tribulation as the wrath of God but that comes with Him and means judgment war and death on the wicked. The resurrection is this: "We shall not all sleep" 1 Corinthians 15:51 Not all sleep, is to say there will be those who will never experience death. See: Matthew 24:40 "Two men will be in the field; one will be taken and left." This is the catching "Ripping us out of this realm" which coincides with what is said in Isa. 26:18-21 and Isa 27 :1 The text is saying that we Jews were looking for Messiah, but we failed to grasp it. It was him "Yeshua" (Jesus). Further on we read the resurrection will happen. This looks like Mat. 24 - Mat. 25 The Parable of the Ten Virgins. This is what we call in Hebraic terms the "Natzel (Marriage)" and is known to Christians as "the Rapture". Those who are ready go to the marriage feast which is about to happen in heaven. The second coming is this: This is the King is coming known as the "Second Coming." He is to rule on earth from Zion. Mathew 24: v29-Immediately after the distress of those days the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light; the stars will fall from the sky, and the heavenly bodies will be shaken. v30-Then will appear the sign of the Son of Man in heaven. And then all the peoples of the earth will mourn when they see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven, with power and great glory.

Why in the world would there be a rapture before a 7-year "Tribulation Period"? Most pre-trib rapturists say that we are not appointed to wrath (1 Thess 5:9) and that we are to escape the Tribulation, which they say is 7-years long. No-where in the Bible is there any hint that the "Tribulation" is 7-years long. A 7 year period of time called Daniel's 70th Week is misinterpreted as referring to the whole Tribulation. But nowhere does the Bible say that. A period, called the Great Tribulation may be interpreted to be during the last half of Daniel's 70th week, or 3-1/2 years long. But the whole 7 years of Daniels 70th week is not "The Tribulation Period". That label is made up by man. It is not Biblical. 1 Thess 5:9 is misinterpreted. Right there in the words of the verse it says that we are not appointed to wrath, but then it goes on to say: "but for obtaining salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ.." So, the purpose of the saving from wrath, is to get Salvation. What does salvation mean? It means being forever with the Lord. It means not going to Hell. That is the wrath we are to be saved from, the wrath of eternal damnation. There is no reference to tribulation, or even Great Tribulation in this verse. How do we know this? Because verse 10 goes on to say: "Who died for us, so that whether we are awake or asleep, we will live together with Him." This verse is all about Jesus sacrificial death and our eternal life, because of His death, with him. Eternal life and escape from the wrath of judgement and hell is what these verses are about - not escape from Satan's wrath during the Tribulation. Now as to the question of why: Why should we be whisked away? No one in the Bible ever was just taken away except Enoch and Elijah - and their circumstances were different than ours. Noah wasn't taken away during the flood. He was protected through it. Israel wasn't whisked away from Egypt -- they spent some 400 years there and were miraculously saved from the plagues (which are reminiscent of the plagues of Revelation) while they were still IN Egypt. God wrath came, and they were protected. People in the Bible rarely escaped the wrath of other people. On multiple occasions they were beaten by the enemy and became refugees, tortured, and transported to another land, such as Babylon. So, they did not escape but were protected during their exile. Why do we 20th Century Christians think we won't be tortured, imprisoned, starved, and put to death in horrible ways for the sake of Christ? It has happened for 2000 years. If God didn't save any of His closest, dearest friends - his Disciples - from torture and death at the hands of their tormentors, why should we expect God to take us out of here? Each Disciple was either crucified, beheaded, or tortured - including John, the most beloved disciple. Tradition says he was boiled in oil and when he didn't die (he was saved, somehow through his torture but not from it) and put in hard labor prison on the isle of Patmos. Christian Chinese, Christian Soviets, Christian Ukrainians (where 4 million died but nobody seems to count them) and countless others were not "taken away." Why do we expect we should be? Corrie Ten Boom said that the worst teaching of missionaries to the Chinese was they they would be rescued by a rapture. When they weren't, many fell away from the faith. That, I think, is what the Bible refers to as the great apostasy at the end of time. It will be when we expect a rapture and it doesn't come. Many will turn away. Only the true Christians will survive or be killed. Oh yes, there will be a Rapture. But not before the 7 years. It will not be before Satan's wrath. It will be immediately before Jesus' second coming and the final physical judgement of God upon the world. Will you be prepared or will you fall away because you expected something that isn't going to happen? I hope for a Rapture before the 7 years, but it isn't in the Bible

The apostle Peter tells us that we should be looking for the "coming" of the day of the Lord. It will be like it was in the days of Noah and the days of Lot. If the ark of Noah and the day Lot and his family were escorted by the angel out of Sodom are a type of the rapture, then it will be the same when Jesus gathers together His saints. It was not possible for anyone to be saved after God shut the door on the ark and the day Lot's family was delivered from God's wrath. It will be the same when Jesus returns. No one will be saved after the rapture.

The rapture was not heard of until the17th century and it is confused by a lot of false teaching. It was introduced to calm people's fears regarding going through the tribulation. The Jews were not taken out of the land of Egypt until after all the plagues but they came to no harm. In the same way we can go through the tribulation without fear. That is how God proves His power. Trust him. Jesus told the disciples that he was going to the Father but that they could not follow (John 13: 36) but he was going to prepare a place for them and he would come again to receive them (John 14:2-3). Matt 24:21-22. Speaking of the "great tribulation" says but for the elects sake those days shall be shortened. Why? If the elect are taken away that makes no sense. There are three places where the second coming is linked to a trumpet. Matt 24:31, 1Thes 4:16 and 1Cor 15:52. the last reference says" at the last trump". Wether this refers to the seventh trumpet of Revalation or another separate occasion is not clear. What is very clear is that you cannot have the last trump followed by seven others so a pre tribulation event is not possible. 1Thes 4:16 For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first. How can the dead in Christ rise if they are already in heaven? Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so we shall everbe with the Lord. The father of the prodigal son went out to meet his son but they did not go to where the son had come from. If I going to friends they may come to meet me at the airport, then I continue the journey, Similarly, if I have friends coming to stay, I go to meet them and return home. I do not go to meet them and then go back to their home. Scripture does not say the Lord is coming to meet us. Wherefore comfort one another with these words.

Your Question was: How can the dead in Christ rise if they are already in heaven? To answer your question - Corruption (those who are present with Him) in heaven as you say, must "put on" incorruption. That is their new body and where are they going? (greek: Houto) in this manner) shall they always (forever) be (Greek: eimi) exist. Off to the Marriage we all go! Just like in Jewish practices the Redeemer (husband to be) comes and takes his Bride... as it is written Hosea 2:19 And I will betroth you to me forever. I will betroth you to me in righteousness and in justice, in steadfast love and in mercy. Then the marriage in Heaven the doors are shut tight "closed" just like in Isa chapter 26. as judgment is being poured out on the Earth - Isa Chapter 27.

The rapture is the same event as the resurrection of the righteous that will occurs at the very beginning of the day of the Lord, which will be a literal day that's the start of the multi-day 7th trumpet with 7 bowls of wrath against the nations coming just after the rapture. In short, a rapture at the very start of the 7th trumpet, as the mystery finishing when the 7th trumpet begins to sound, shows a very fast mystery that can only be the rapture mystery that happens "in the twinkling of an eye". Also, "time no longer" is on the "last day" when the resurrection of the righteous occurs: -John 6:40: And this is the will of him that sent me, that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life: and I will raise him up at the last day. -Revelation 10:6-7: And sware by him that liveth for ever and ever, who created heaven, and the things that therein are, and the earth, and the things that therein are, and the sea, and the things which are therein, that there should be time no longer: But in the days of the voice of the seventh angel, when he shall begin to sound, the mystery of God should be finished. -1 Corinthians 15:51-52: Behold, I tell you a mystery; we will not all sleep, but we will all be changed, in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet; for the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed. -Revelation 11:15-18: And the seventh angel sounded; and there were great voices in heaven, saying, The kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord, and of his Christ; and he shall reign for ever and ever. And the four and twenty elders, which sat before God on their seats, fell upon their faces, and worshipped God, saying, We give thee thanks, O Lord God Almighty, which art, and wast, and art to come; because thou hast taken to thee thy great power, and hast reigned. And the nations were angry, and thy wrath is come, and the time of the dead, that they should be judged, and that thou shouldest give reward unto thy servants the prophets, and to the saints, and them that fear thy name, small and great; and shouldest destroy them which destroy the earth. Lastly, the 7th trumpet rapture will last more than one day, as "days" is plural in Revelation 10:7, which says "in the days of the voice of the 7th angel." The raptured will avoid the 7 bowls of wrath, which are all inside the multi-day blowing of the 7th trumpet.
