✿ Both sin and death came by Adam's transgression of Gen. 2:17. In Rom. 5:12-21 Paul shows that the consequences of Christ's obedience extend as far as Adam's disobedience. Gentiles are descendants of Adam and partake of his sin and its consequences, so they are free to partake of the redemption of Christ. This again puts the Gentiles on an equal basis with Jews in Adam, Abraham, and Christ. Sin is of universal effect. From Adam all people derive their beings (Acts 17:26). The whole race was in his loins when he sinned. He was its spiritual, moral, and physical fountainhead, and its sole representative. He did not act as a single person but as the whole race. When he fell he sinned for all. When God contracted with him, it was a contract for the whole race. His progeny became a part of the covenant and blessings if he obeyed and of the curses if he sinned.

Paul is referring to the commission of the first sin, as related in Genesis 3:1-19, by Adam and Eve. He says that sin entered the world through one man (even though it was technically a woman (Eve) who first disobeyed God's commandment by eating the fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and evil) since it was to Adam directly (prior to the creation of Eve) that God had originally given the commandment not to eat the fruit of that tree (Genesis 2:16); because Adam (as well as Eve) had eaten the fruit; and because Adam and Eve (as husband and wife) were considered to be "one flesh" (Genesis 2:24). Therefore, the disobedience was said to have originated with Adam.

Also, although the eating of the forbidden fruit was a sin of action, it was caused by an underlying sin of thought (that is, the sin of pride) by Eve and Adam in believing Satan's lie that eating the fruit would make them like God, which was the same desire on Satan's (Lucifer's) part that had originally resulted in his expulsion from heaven (Isaiah 14:12-15).

Romans 5:12: "Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned."

Comparing scriptures, you will identify that the sin that came through one man (First Adam) as seen in Gen. 3:1-19 and Galatians 5:12 is nature called SIN Nature.

Everyone in the loins of Adam inherited that nature and therefore became automatically a sinner at birth. This nature of sin that we bear makes humanity naturally predisposed to sin. It had invaded our minds and corrupted our hearts as unregenerated persons, so that even in our good deeds there are still traceable traits of sin such as our motive. David testified to this in Psalm 51:5 "Behold, in iniquity was I brought forth, and in sin did my mother conceive me." 

We all by predisposition exhibit and reflect the character trait of sin whether by commitance or not because what we inherited in Adam was not just sin but a nature of sin. Sin then becomes our natural habitat. It becomes something we easily slip into, what naturally comes to our minds and happens from within us until Christ came to redeem us from the law of sin and death via the law of the Spirit of life in Him.

Lastly, Romans 5:13: For until the law sin was in the world: but sin is not imputed when there is no law.
Romans 5:14 Nevertheless death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over them that had not sinned after the similitude of Adam's transgression, who is the figure of him that was to come.

This tells us that sin nature had clothed humanity and not imputed on any by the legislation here on earth until the law. However, in the eyes of God that nature of sin was a stronghold to humanity and needs to be broken. The consequence of sin is death. For by sin, death reigned. Death reigned over people who didn't commit the same atrocities as Adam because of the sin nature and that was a shadow of God's approaching ultimate plan (Romans 5:14). That is, just the way the nature of sin came to Humanity via the first Adam and led to death, so is God's plan to ensure life eternal to all human race by ultimate sacrifice of His dear son, Jesus Christ, the last Adam.

Sin is not a “thing.” Sin is a human action of disobedience to God’s will. (James 1:13-15) We should also distinguish that the sin being spoken of is human sin. Animals do not sin because they have no free will. They always do God’s will in accord with their God-given instincts. 

In my opinion, the “sin” that came into the world through the one man (Adam), was a genetically inheritable predisposition. All of Adam’s descendants would inherit a temperament that was inclined towards pride and selfishness. This re-arrangement of Adam’s gene-chemistry occurred as a result of his eating the Forbidden Fruit (FF). 

In my opinion, God could have built such a provision into the chemistry of the FF. He knew that if Adam sinned, both he and his offspring would need a motivating instinct based upon pride and selfishness to survive. However, the change in chemistry could also have been by the power of the Holy Spirit just as had occurred with Mary in order for her to have a male child without a husband. (Luke 1:35) That the change to Adam and Eve’s body chemistry was manifest immediately is indicated by their eyes being “opened” and they comprehended their own nakedness. (Genesis 3:7)

Pride (haughty eyes) is listed as the first of the “seven deadly sins” of Proverbs 6:16-19. Pride is what entangled the mighty Lucifer, son of the morning (dawn), and prompted him to rebel against his sovereign LORD. (Isaiah 14:12-15) 

Pride also produces selfishness. When Jesus was asked to summarize the Law, he listed love of God and love of neighbor as the essence of Godly conduct. (Matthew 22:36-40; Mark 12:28-31) Because of our inherited sinful nature, the only way sin can be removed from our lives is for us to become a “new creature” in Christ. (2 Corinthians 5:17) This involves being re-born in Christ and no longer being a son of Adam with his sin nature. (John 3:3) This factor is summarized in 1 Corinthians 15:22 when it says, “For as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will be made alive.”

In Romans 5:12 the Greek word for sin is [ hamartia] which is used 35 times in the New Testament in this form. The word means to miss the mark or to err or to wander from the path of uprightness and honor.

Taking then these meanings, what Adam and Eve did to err by missing the mark that God had set wandering from the right or really only path or way of uprightness and honor.

Proverbs 14:12 says that " there is a way that seems right to a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death. KJV

So what is the specific mark or way did the one man Adam err in or miss. I believe it goes to what John wrote in 1 John 2:16, fleshly desire based on pride. 

He and she bought what the father of lies John 8:44 was selling, doubting God's word, disobeying God's will and desiring to be God in human wisdom.

The first sin is the same sin that has plagued humanity ever since thank God there came a second man the Man Jesus Christ and through Him, the gift of Grace abounded that through Faith in Him and what He did we might be forgiven and reconciled back to God given eternal life that overcomes death.
