John 5:1-6:71
1
After this there was a o feast of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.
2
Now there is in Jerusalem by p the Sheep Gate a pool, in Aramaic called Bethesda, which has five roofed colonnades.
3
In these lay a multitude of invalids - blind, lame, and q paralyzed.
5
One man was there who had been an invalid for thirty-eight years.
6
When Jesus saw him lying there and knew that he had already been there a long time, he said to him, "Do you want to be healed?"
7
The sick man answered him, "Sir, I have no one to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up, and while I am going another steps down before me."
8
Jesus said to him, r "Get up, take up your bed, and walk."
9
r And at once the man was healed, and he took up his bed and walked. s Now that day was the Sabbath.
10
So the Jews said to the man who had been healed, "It is the Sabbath, and t it is not lawful for you to take up your bed."
11
But he answered them, "The man who healed me, that man said to me, 'Take up your bed, and walk.'"
12
They asked him, "Who is the man who said to you, 'Take up your bed and walk'?"
13
Now the man who had been healed did not know who it was, for u Jesus had withdrawn, as there was a crowd in the place.
14
Afterward Jesus found him in the temple and said to him, "See, you are well! v Sin no more, w that nothing worse may happen to you."
15
The man went away and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had healed him.
16
And this was why the Jews x were persecuting Jesus, y because he was doing these things on the Sabbath.
17
But Jesus answered them, "My Father is working until now, and I am working."
18
This was why the Jews z were seeking all the more to kill him, a because not only was he b breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God c his own Father, d making himself equal with God.
19
So Jesus said to them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, e the Son f can do nothing of his own accord, but only what he sees the Father doing. For whatever the Father does, that the Son does likewise.
20
For g the Father loves the Son and shows him all that he himself is doing. And h greater works than these will he show him, so that i you may marvel.
21
For as the Father j raises the dead and k gives them life, so l also the Son gives life m to whom he will.
22
n The Father judges no one, but o has given all judgment to the Son,
23
that all may honor the Son, just as they p honor the Father. q Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent him.
24
Truly, truly, I say to you, r whoever hears my word and s believes him who sent me has eternal life. He t does not come into judgment, but u has passed from death to life.
25
"Truly, truly, I say to you, v an hour is coming, and is now here, when w the dead will hear x the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear w will live.
26
y For as the Father has life in himself, z so he has granted the Son also to have life in himself.
27
And he a has given him authority to execute judgment, because he is the Son of Man.
28
Do not marvel at this, for v an hour is coming when b all who are in the tombs will hear his voice
29
and come out, c those who have done good to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil to the resurrection of judgment.
30
d "I can do nothing on my own. As I hear, I judge, and e my judgment is just, because f I seek not my own will g but the will of him who sent me.
31
h If I alone bear witness about myself, my testimony is not deemed true.
32
There is i another who bears witness about me, and j I know that the testimony that he bears about me is true.
33
k You sent to John, and he has borne witness to the truth.
34
Not that l the testimony that I receive is from man, but I say these things so that you may be saved.
35
He was a burning and m shining lamp, and n you were willing to rejoice for a while in his light.
36
But l the testimony that I have is greater than that of John. For o the works that the Father has given me p to accomplish, the very works that I am doing, q bear witness about me that r the Father has sent me.
37
And the Father who sent me s has himself borne witness about me. His voice you have never heard, t his form you have never seen,
38
and u you do not have his word abiding in you, for you do not believe the one whom he has sent.
39
v You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and w it is they that bear witness about me,
40
yet x you refuse to come to me that you may have life.
41
y I do not receive glory from people.
42
But z I know that you do not have a the love of God within you.
43
I have come b in my Father's name, and c you do not receive me. d If another comes in his own name, you will receive him.
44
How can you believe, when you receive glory from one another and e do not seek the glory that comes from f the only God?
45
Do not think that I will accuse you to the Father. There is one who accuses you: Moses, g on whom you have set your hope.
46
For if you believed Moses, you would believe me; for h he wrote of me.
47
But i if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe my words?"
John 6
1
After this j Jesus went away to the other side of k the Sea of Galilee, which is l the Sea of Tiberias.
2
And a large crowd was following him, because they saw the signs that he was doing on the sick.
3
Jesus went up on m the mountain, and there he sat down with his disciples.
4
Now n the Passover, the o feast of the Jews, was at hand.
5
p Lifting up his eyes, then, and seeing that a large crowd was coming toward him, Jesus said to q Philip, "Where are we to buy bread, so that these people may eat?"
6
He said this to test him, for he himself knew what he would do.
7
r Philip answered him, "Two hundred denarii would not buy enough bread for each of them to get a little."
8
One of his disciples, s Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, said to him,
9
"There is a boy here who has five t barley loaves and two fish, but t what are they for so many?"
10
Jesus said, "Have the people sit down." u Now there was much grass in the place. So the men sat down, about five thousand in number.
11
Jesus then took the loaves, and v when he had given thanks, he distributed them to those who were seated. So also the fish, as much as they wanted.
12
And when they had eaten their fill, he told his disciples, "Gather up the leftover fragments, that nothing may be lost."
13
So they gathered them up and filled twelve baskets with fragments from the five barley loaves left by those who had eaten.
14
When the people saw the sign that he had done, they said, w "This is indeed x the Prophet y who is to come into the world!"
15
z Perceiving then that they were about to come and take him by force to make him king, Jesus a withdrew again to b the mountain by himself.
16
When evening came, his disciples went down to the sea,
17
got into a boat, and started across the sea to Capernaum. It was now dark, and Jesus had not yet come to them.
18
The sea became rough because a strong wind was blowing.
19
When they had rowed about three or four miles, they saw Jesus walking on the sea and coming near the boat, and they were frightened.
20
c But he said to them, "It is I; do not be afraid."
21
Then they were glad to take him into the boat, and immediately the boat was at the land to which they were going.
22
On the next day the crowd that remained on the other side of the sea saw that there had been only d one boat there, and that Jesus had not entered the boat with his disciples, but that his disciples had gone away alone.
23
Other boats from Tiberias came near the place where they had eaten the bread after the Lord e had given thanks.
24
f So when the crowd saw that Jesus was not there, nor his disciples, they themselves got into the boats and g went to Capernaum, seeking Jesus.
25
When they found him on the other side of the sea, they said to him, h "Rabbi, when did you come here?"
26
Jesus answered them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, i you are seeking me, not because you saw j signs, but because you ate your fill of the loaves.
27
k Do not labor for the food that perishes, but for l the food that endures to eternal life, which m the Son of Man will give to you. For on n him God the Father has o set his seal."
28
Then they said to him, "What must we do, to be doing p the works of God?"
29
Jesus answered them, "This is the work of God, q that you believe in him whom r he has sent."
30
So they said to him, s "Then what sign do you do, that we may see and believe you? What work do you perform?
31
t Our fathers ate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written, u 'He gave them bread from heaven to eat.'"
32
Jesus then said to them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, it was not Moses who gave you the bread from heaven, but my Father gives you the true bread from heaven.
33
For the bread of God is v he who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world."
34
They said to him, w "Sir, give us this bread always."
35
Jesus said to them, x "I am the bread of life; y whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst.
36
But I said to you that you have seen me and yet do not believe.
37
z All that a the Father gives me will come to me, and b whoever comes to me I will never cast out.
38
For c I have come down from heaven, not to do d my own will but d the will of him e who sent me.
39
And f this is the will of him who sent me, g that I should lose nothing of h all that he has given me, but i raise it up on the last day.
40
For this is the will of my Father, that everyone who j looks on the Son and k believes in him l should have eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day."
41
So the Jews grumbled about him, because he said, m "I am the bread that came down from heaven."
42
They said, n "Is not this Jesus, o the son of Joseph, whose father and mother p we know? How does he now say, 'I have come down from heaven'?"
43
Jesus answered them, "Do not grumble among yourselves.
44
No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me q draws him. And r I will raise him up on the last day.
45
It is written in the Prophets, s 'And they will all be t taught by God.' u Everyone who has heard and learned from the Father comes to me -
46
v not that anyone has seen the Father except w he who is from God; he x has seen the Father.
47
Truly, truly, I say to you, y whoever believes has eternal life.
48
z I am the bread of life.
49
a Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, and b they died.
50
c This is the bread that comes down from heaven, so that one may eat of it d and not die.
51
I am the living bread e that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever. And the bread that I will give f for the life of the world is g my flesh."
52
The Jews then h disputed among themselves, saying, i "How can this man give us his flesh to eat?"
53
So Jesus said to them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of j the Son of Man and drink his blood, you k have no life in you.
54
Whoever feeds on my flesh and drinks my blood l has eternal life, and m I will raise him up on the last day.
55
For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink.
56
Whoever feeds on my flesh and drinks my blood n abides in me, and I in him.
57
As o the living Father p sent me, and q I live because of the Father, so whoever feeds on me, he also will live because of me.
58
r This is the bread that came down from heaven, not like the bread the fathers ate and died. Whoever feeds on this bread will live forever."
59
Jesus said these things in the synagogue, as he taught s at Capernaum.
60
t When many of his disciples heard it, they said, "This is a hard saying; who can listen to it?"
61
But Jesus, v knowing in himself that his disciples were grumbling about this, said to them, "Do you take offense at this?
62
Then what if you were to see w the Son of Man x ascending to y where he was before?
63
z It is the Spirit who gives life; a the flesh is no help at all. b The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life.
64
But c there are some of you who do not believe." (For Jesus v knew from the beginning who those were who did not believe, and d who it was who would betray him.)
65
And he said, "This is why I told you e that no one can come to me unless it is granted him by the Father."
66
f After this many of his disciples turned back and no longer walked with him.
67
So Jesus said to g the Twelve, "Do you want to go away as well?"
68
Simon Peter answered him, "Lord, to whom shall we go? You have h the words of eternal life,
69
and i we have believed, and have come to know, that j you are k the Holy One of God."
70
Jesus answered them, l "Did I not choose you, g the Twelve? And yet one of you is m a devil."
71
He spoke of Judas n the son of Simon Iscariot, for o he, one of the Twelve, was going to betray him.
