Will believers be judged?

Verses 24 and 29 seem to be opposed. How can Jesus say that the believers are given eternal life and are beyond judgement, then turn around five verses later and say we are judged by works?

I know that God says we must account for our deeds and for what we've done with the allotment he's given us. But I've always thought our fate at judgement day was determined by the 'Lamb's book of life', and not by our deeds?

NOTE: I am familiar with the judgement which determines crowns etc. My concern lies with the fact that both of these uses of 'judgement' seem to be referring to judgement of eternity or salvation. If I'm missing some clue that points to the judgement about rewards, please indicate.

John 5:24 - 29

ESV - 24 Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life. He does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life. 25 Truly, truly, I say to you, an hour is coming, and is now here, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live.
