The Coming Day of Bitter Mourning
Thus the Lord GOD showed me: Behold, a basket of summer fruit.
And He said, "Amos, what do you see?" So I said, "A basket of summer fruit." Then the LORD said to me:
a "The end has come upon My people Israel;
b I will not pass by them anymore.
And c the songs of the temple
Shall be wailing in that day,"
Says the Lord GOD -
"Many dead bodies everywhere,
d They shall be thrown out in silence."
Hear this, you who swallow up the needy,
And make the poor of the land fail,
"When will the New Moon be past,
That we may sell grain?
And e the Sabbath,
That we may trade wheat?
f Making the ephah small and the shekel large,
Falsifying the scales by g deceit,
That we may buy the poor for h silver,
And the needy for a pair of sandals -
Even sell the bad wheat?"
The LORD has sworn by i the pride of Jacob:
"Surely j I will never forget any of their works.
k Shall the land not tremble for this,
And everyone mourn who dwells in it?
All of it shall swell like the River,
Heave and subside
l Like the River of Egypt.
"And it shall come to pass in that day," says the Lord GOD,
m "That I will make the sun go down at noon,
And I will darken the earth in broad daylight;
I will turn your feasts into n mourning,
o And all your songs into lamentation;
p I will bring sackcloth on every waist,
And baldness on every head;
I will make it like mourning for an only son,
And its end like a bitter day.
"Behold, the days are coming," says the Lord GOD,
"That I will send a famine on the land,
Not a famine of bread,
Nor a thirst for water,
But q of hearing the words of the LORD.
They shall wander from sea to sea,
And from north to east;
They shall run to and fro, seeking the word of the LORD,
But shall r not find it.
"In that day the fair virgins
And strong young men
Shall faint from thirst.
Those who s swear by t the sin of Samaria,
'As your god lives, O Dan!'
And, 'As the way of u Beersheba lives!'
They shall fall and never rise again."

And you, son of man, thus says the Lord GOD to the land of Israel: 'An end! The end has come upon the four corners of the land.
And the LORD said to me, "Amos, what do you see?" And I said, "A plumb line." Then the Lord said: "Behold, I am setting a plumb line In the midst of My people Israel; I will not pass by them anymore.
Take away from Me the noise of your songs, For I will not hear the melody of your stringed instruments.
Then it shall come to pass, that if ten men remain in one house, they shall die.
And when a relative of the dead, with one who will burn the bodies, picks up the bodies to take them out of the house, he will say to one inside the house, " Are there any more with you?" Then someone will say, "None." And he will say, "Hold your tongue! For we dare not mention the name of the LORD.
Exodus 31:13 - 17
Speak also to the children of Israel, saying: 'Surely My Sabbaths you shall keep, for it is a sign between Me and you throughout your generations, that you may know that I am the LORD who sanctifies you.
In those days I saw people in Judah treading wine presses on the Sabbath, and bringing in sheaves, and loading donkeys with wine, grapes, figs, and all kinds of burdens, which they brought into Jerusalem on the Sabbath day. And I warned them about the day on which they were selling provisions.
Are there yet the treasures of wickedness In the house of the wicked, And the short measure that is an abomination?
Shall I count pure those with the wicked scales, And with the bag of deceitful weights?
You shall do no injustice in judgment, in measurement of length, weight, or volume.
You shall have honest scales, honest weights, an honest ephah, and an honest hin: I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt.
Deuteronomy 25:13 - 15
You shall not have in your bag differing weights, a heavy and a light.
Thus says the LORD: "For three transgressions of Israel, and for four, I will not turn away its punishment, Because they sell the righteous for silver, And the poor for a pair of sandals.
There is no one like the God of Jeshurun, Who rides the heavens to help you, And in His excellency on the clouds.
Happy are you, O Israel! Who is like you, a people saved by the LORD, The shield of your help And the sword of your majesty! Your enemies shall submit to you, And you shall tread down their high places.
Ascribe strength to God; His excellence is over Israel, And His strength is in the clouds.
The Lord GOD has sworn by Himself, The LORD God of hosts says: "I abhor the pride of Jacob, And hate his palaces; Therefore I will deliver up the city And all that is in it.
He has said in his heart, "God has forgotten; He hides His face; He will never see.
They do not consider in their hearts That I remember all their wickedness; Now their own deeds have surrounded them; They are before My face.
For the sacrifices of My offerings they sacrifice flesh and eat it, But the LORD does not accept them. Now He will remember their iniquity and punish their sins. They shall return to Egypt.
Therefore the land will mourn; And everyone who dwells there will waste away With the beasts of the field And the birds of the air; Even the fish of the sea will be taken away.
Who is this coming up like a flood, Whose waters move like the rivers?
Egypt rises up like a flood, And its waters move like the rivers; And he says, 'I will go up and cover the earth, I will destroy the city and its inhabitants.
The Lord GOD of hosts, He who touches the earth and it melts, And all who dwell there mourn; All of it shall swell like the River, And subside like the River of Egypt.

They will also be girded with sackcloth; Horror will cover them; Shame will be on every face, Baldness on all their heads.
He has gone up to the temple and Dibon, To the high places to weep. Moab will wail over Nebo and over Medeba; On all their heads will be baldness, And every beard cut off.
In their streets they will clothe themselves with sackcloth; On the tops of their houses And in their streets Everyone will wail, weeping bitterly.
For every head shall be bald, and every beard clipped; On all the hands shall be cuts, and on the loins sackcloth -
They will shave themselves completely bald because of you, Gird themselves with sackcloth, And weep for you With bitterness of heart and bitter wailing.
O daughter of my people, Dress in sackcloth And roll about in ashes! Make mourning as for an only son, most bitter lamentation; For the plunderer will suddenly come upon us.
And I will pour on the house of David and on the inhabitants of Jerusalem the Spirit of grace and supplication; then they will look on Me whom they pierced. Yes, they will mourn for Him as one mourns for his only son, and grieve for Him as one grieves for a firstborn.
1 Samuel 3:1
Now the boy Samuel ministered to the LORD before Eli. And the word of the LORD was rare in those days; there was no widespread revelation.
2 Chronicles 15:3
For a long time Israel has been without the true God, without a teaching priest, and without law.
We do not see our signs; There is no longer any prophet; Nor is there any among us who knows how long.
Disaster will come upon disaster, And rumor will be upon rumor. Then they will seek a vision from a prophet; But the law will perish from the priest, And counsel from the elders.
Therefore you shall have night without vision, And you shall have darkness without divination; The sun shall go down on the prophets, And the day shall be dark for them.
With their flocks and herds They shall go to seek the LORD, But they will not find Him; He has withdrawn Himself from them.
Though you, Israel, play the harlot, Let not Judah offend. Do not come up to Gilgal, Nor go up to Beth Aven, Nor swear an oath, saying, 'As the LORD lives' -
Then I took your sin, the calf which you had made, and burned it with fire and crushed it and ground it very small, until it was as fine as dust; and I threw its dust into the brook that descended from the mountain.
But do not seek Bethel, Nor enter Gilgal, Nor pass over to Beersheba; For Gilgal shall surely go into captivity, And Bethel shall come to nothing.
