How does faith differ from wishful thinking?

Is faith based on any type of proof, knowledge, or reason to trust?  Or, is it subjective hope and wishful thinking?

Hebrews 11:1

ESV - 1 Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.
