...More often than not, there is a real abandonment issue in these situations. But it isn't GOD giving up on us--it is that we have given up on HIM--and ordinarily it is to our perception "in a small way..." Not totally abandoning God on our part, but sliding away from Him "in some small way..."

However, make no mistake... There is no such thing as slipping away from God "...in some small way." That would be like saying Adam and Eve, eating of the forbidden fruit, sort of slipped away. A schism from God is totally major in reality... 

However, WE HUMANS ORDINARILY THINK OTHERWISE! We think perhaps we have simply backslidden a bit. But not staying with the straight and narrow will ordinarily get the Holy Spirit to start whispering... That's when we THINK "...God might have given up on us."

Nothing could be further from the truth. God is always there... Always...

What has happened is that we have cooled off in our concentration of walking in Jesus' Way...

Let's look at the Bible...

"So, because you are lukewarm--neither hot nor cold--I am about to spit you out of my mouth." Revelation 3:16 NIV

Such a situation means you must take everything--absolutely everything--in your life to God in prayer. Allow the Holy Spirit to lead you. Determine where you have fallen astray. I assure you, it will not be hard to figure out where your problem is.

None other than Paul fought such battles... His prayer life brought forth a remarkably clean and lucid confession to God...

"For I have the desire to do what is right, but not the ability to carry it out. For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I keep on doing. Now if I do what I do not want, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells within me.

So I find it to be a law that when I want to do right, evil lies close at hand. For I delight in the law of God, in my inner being, but I see in my members another law waging war against the law of my mind and making me captive to the law of sin that dwells in my members. Wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death? Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, I myself serve the law of God with my mind, but with my flesh I serve the law of sin." (Revelation 7:19-25) ESV 

The remedy for feeling a lack of closeness to God is that GOLDEN KEY: Take it to the Lord in Prayer.
