What did Jesus mean when He said to 'not cast your pearls before swine'?

Matthew 7:6

ESV - 6 Do not give dogs what is holy, and do not throw your pearls before pigs, lest they trample them underfoot and turn to attack you.

This is such a difficult area and one that we MUST know we're led by God in. There are times when I feel led to witness, even when the person is attacking my faith. In fact, I have done so for decades and found that my witnessing to them turns them to God and they ultimately accept Christ. In all cases I witness once, and if attacked I say, "I understand we don't see eye to eye on this, but if things ever change, please know I'm here to answer any questions or talk about it, but I won't initiate the conversation because it obviously offends you." I then pray for them and let God work in them. So, be discerning! My question is, How do you approach/share with people who might be pigs or dogs, or could just be someone who seems like a pig or dog, but is really ripe for witnessing to?
