Sin often harms another person, but, ultimately, all sin is against God. The Bible contains many references to people admitting, 'I have sinned against God' (Exodus 10:16; Joshua 7:20; Judges 10:10...

Sin separates us from God. All have sinned and fallen short of the Glory of God.

The word sin is used in Scripture over 400 times. In all cases whether in Hebrew or Geek the word carries a meaning of an offense against what God has clearly delineated as His Way.

God's creation whether angelic or human or cosmic or nature was created in perfection[ Genesis 1:26-27 and Ezekiel 28:12-15 ]. When Adam and Eve missed the mark God had established and disobeyed, it automatically brought death and flawed perfection. From that time forward every sin flaws perfection and eternal life. Since God is Perfection by being Holy and Righteous [ Isaiah 5:16 ], every sin is against God.

The simple answer may be the most obvious, in my opinion. We know that there is a “contest” being waged between God and the Devil. This was exemplified in the trials of Job. (Job 2:3-6) Apparently, this same type contest also involves the whole of humanity as well. (Revelation 12:10)

If a New Testament person is in Christ or an Old Testament servant strives to follow God’s commands, than any personal sin is consciously committed against God and acknowledged as such. For those that have never been involved with God or Christ, any personal sin supports the Devil’s side of the issue and is likewise indirectly against God. That includes everyone and so all sins are against God one way or another.

There is always a clear standard against which sin is committed and that ultimately all sin is a positive rebellion against God and a transgression of His standards.--Lehman Strauss

When I worked with Campus Crusade for Christ and was explaining Law 2, “Man is sinful and separated from God; thus he cannot know and experience God’s love and plan for his life," I almost always asked the person, “What do you think sin is?” and followed it up with “Sin is either active rebellion against God or just passive resistance.”

"All sin hurts us and others, but ultimately it offends God because sin in any form is a rebellion against God's way of living. When tempted to do wrong, remember that you will be sinning against God. That may help you avoid the danger." LASB
