For most people, physical exercise is difficult. I was a "body builder" before I became a Christian and I've tried all forms of exercise since to keep me somewhat healthy.

God convicted me in the second year of my walk with Him about spending 2-3 hours a day "lifting". He asked me to compare how much time I spent on the temporal (physical) as opposed to the eternal (spirit-godliness). I was convicted and stopped all exercise for three years and got fat.

I don't think that ignoring our physical body health needs is wise. I have struggled to know the balance and always put the physical on the "back burner" in favor of the spiritual.

I have learned that as humans have to do what we enjoy for physical exercise. Since I have a long history with lifting weights I have found I like it; its fun for me and gets my heart going. And I enjoy lifting heavy weight which makes me a very large muscular man. I don't enjoy running or walking, but do some form of cardio on an elliptical or recumbent bike.

The big difference in my exercise is my focus. Is it upon God or man? Being a man with fleshly desires (1 John 2:16) I can't go to a gym. My eyes get the best of me and I fall into sin. So I purchased all the equipment used to create my own gym in my garage. I have an MP3 player in my gym with all my favorite pastor teachings and play them while I work out. This balanced view of physical exercise and building up my faith (Romans 10:17) is perfect and glorious. I am able to honor God with my body and my spirit is built up as well.

I know this is a touchy subject and want to be sensitive. I would like to ask what is the purpose of your exercise? Matthew 5:28 I exercise in a manner that is fun for me, but keeps me from worshiping the temporal. It keeps me somewhat healthy so I may use my body to bring glory and honor to my Lord and Savior Jesus. 2 Timothy 2:3-5

We have to strive as best we can in order to please God. But remember that the load God brings is not horrible, but light. Matthew 11:30 Pray and ask God what He would want you to do. My path was harsh, but needful as I was worshiping my body. Yet I believe it is balance now because of God's grace upon me.
