Why, despite giving my life to Christ and praying, I still feel I do not know if I am saved or not?

Paul, thanks for the question. I do believe that I am saved. But I also believe that I have free choice, and so along with Paul I can say that I must die daily.
I am sure that the issue of "faith" or the lack thereof is the reason for the state of mediocrity that plagues Christianity today. We need to believe that we serve a risen Lord, who has conquered death and the grave. If we really believed that all things were possible thru Him, that we are children of God, that we have access to divine nature, that we are no longer slaves to sin, etc, etc, than, boy, would Christianity look different! We need to KNOW who we serve. We are fighting a foe that has already been conquered!
I can understand why it would send warning flags up if I were to doubt that Jesus is able to save me. He is able to save to the uttermost all that come to God thru Him! I do however think that it is wise to always doubt ourselves. We are week human beings who need to constantly look to Christ for all things. I find that people will start to trust themselves and their merits from "being saved" and loose sight of what a true follower of Christ should look like. This is where faith and presumption get mixed up.
Faith is in no sense allied to presumption. Only he who has true faith is secure against presumption. For presumption is Satan's counterfeit of faith. Faith claims God's promises, and brings forth fruit in obedience. Presumption also claims the promises, but uses them as Satan did, to excuse transgression. Faith would have led our first parents to trust the love of God, and to obey His commands.
Presumption led them to transgress His law, believing that His great love would save them from the consequence of their sin. It is not faith that claims the favor of Heaven without complying with the conditions on which mercy is to be granted. Genuine faith has its foundation in the promises and provisions of the Scriptures.
