God created man from the dust of the ground, formed him into an image of Himself and then breathed into the man He created the breath of life and at that moment in time the man became a "living soul". Ge 2:7 And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul. Notice that man does not have a soul, he is a living soul, a human being. The term living soul applies to the whole man/woman which if they are alive means a breathing individual person. Take away the breath of life and man/woman becomes a dead soul - person. Notice that fish and mammals that live in the sea are called souls: Re 16:3 And the second angel poured out his vial upon the sea; and it became as the blood of a dead man: and every living soul died in the sea. Notice: Hebrews 4:12 For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. Here the soul is the body and spirit refers to the thought and intents of the heart, which are part of the whole person, being Notice: 1 Co 15:45 And so it is written, The first man Adam was made a living soul; the last Adam was made a quickening spirit. Adam was a living soul - being a living breathing person, and Jesus is now a life giving spirit - a glorified man seated next to his God and Father above the heavenlies. He is the one who give us the spirit that imparts spiritual life, resurrection life to those who are in his body, that make up the Israel of God, the congregation of God the called-out Assembly of God - Yehovah.

It likely is not a coincidence that the definitive statement on this subject is found in the Faith Chapter of the Bible, Hebrews, Chapter 11. For the answer to this question requires a child like faith in the limited places the Bible addresses this subject. What follows are those places. You are welcome to your own conclusion. Hebrews 11:3 (NKJV) By faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that the things which are seen were not made of things which are visible. Our souls are not outwardly visible, but they are to God. This ‘tent’ (2 Corinthians 5:1) that we live in is only that, a covering. Note, from this Scripture, that we have an earthly ‘house’ and a heavenly ‘house’ and the heavenly house is “not made with hands”. Our fleshly bodies are a product of pro-creation, the union of a man’s seed and a woman’s egg. Our soul is the product of creation by our Lord and Savior, something created from nothing. There is at least one example in the Bible of the soul being in existence before the birth process, and being selected as well. It is found in the book of Jeremiah. Jeremiah 1:4-5 (NASB) Now the word of the LORD came to me saying, "Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you; I have appointed you a prophet to the nations." Ecclesiastes 1:10 (KJV) Is there any thing whereof it may be said, See, this is new? It hath been already of old time, which was before us. The Hebrew word for, old time, is olam H5769. It is: “concealed, i.e. the vanishing point; generally time out of mind.” The vanishing point turns out to be the time of the Flood, as evidenced by Enoch’s words in “The Lost Book of Enoch” Chapter 37:1-2. He spoke to members of his family, before the Flood and said, “Hear you men of old time, and see, you that come after…” The Flood occurred within 100 years after the judgments that were made at the Foundation of the World, when God made a choice for the elect. The Foundation of the World is when those chosen, had their names written in the Book of Life. In 2 Timothy 1:9 we find that grace was given to us in Christ Jesus before time began. This would have to date back to ‘old time’ when Jesus chose us before the Foundation of the World (Eph. 1:4), and freely bestowed (Eph. 1:6 NASB) on us the glory of His grace. And in Titus 1:1-2 (NKJV) we find that this grace which was bestowed upon us is the hope of eternal life which God promised before time began. You cannot be given something if you do not exist.

My simplistic answer is this: God created all things, both seen and unseen; with blood, skin and bones; with or without form or even physical molecules--such as the 'space' between planets, moons, asteroids, etc--He created EVERYTHING! This 'EVERYTHING' includes our souls. "God so loved the world, that He sent His one and only begotten Son to die on that cross so that we may have a home in heaven with Him". Human souls were not created, it is a breath of life given by the LORD God to man wich was formed from the dust of the ground and caused a man became a living being. (Genesis 2: 7). Soul is the immaterial and immortal essence, animating principle, or actuating cause of an individual life; therefore, man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the LORD (Deuteronomy 8: 3; Matthew 4: 4).

Going back to Genesis will take us through the step-by-step mechanism in the formation/creation of man. "And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath (nhshamah) of life (chay); and man became a living soul(nephesh)." (Gen. 2:7). Notice here that "nephesh" was translated "soul" As the preceding verse connotes, man was formed from "dust of the ground", matter-composed. Whereas, the "breath of life" came from God, who did not use "matter" like "dust of the ground", and therefore spirit-composed. What was formed from "dust of the ground" was the "lifeless" physical body, viz., brain, heart and other parts of the body. This "lifeless body" became alive only when God "breathed into his nostrils this "spirit-composed breath of life". Then and only then did man become a"living soul", a "nephesh" or breathing creature. Meaning, body+breath of life="living soul"; nephesh/breathing creature. This tells us that a living being(human) has 2 components, viz., body and breath of life before being classified or called as a "living soul/nephesh". In Biblical parlance, one can deduce to a certain extent that the English word "soul" in the O.T. refers to a "living being/human". The "body" has to be alive to be called "soul"(nephesh/breathing creature), hence the emphasis on the descriptive phrase "living soul" in Gen. 2:7. Otherwise, the body without the "breath of life"(nshamah chay) is "lifeless". Nephesh or living creature/soul is a composite of "body(soma) and breath of life(nshamah). Proof of these two separate components can be derived from the fact that each one can be destroyed or killed, as in: Matthew 10:28 "And fear not them which kill the body(soma), but are not able to kill the soul(psyche): but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul(psyche) and body(soma) in hell(Gehenna)." Notice that "breath of life", Hebrew "nshamah chay" in Old Testament, is Greek "psyche" in New Testament and equivalent in English to "soul". Strictly speaking and to prevent misunderstanding, the English translation "soul" should have been limited by the "translator" and only be specifically applied to "living creature"(nephesh) composed of body/soma and psyche/ human spirit as the translated word "soul" does not accurately convey the actual reference to the 2 separate components of man. Regarding I Thes.5:23"...pray God your whole spirit(pneuma) and soul(psyche) and body(soma) be preserved...", the "and" is copulative primary particle, i.e., even, also or the same and consistent with the concept that spirit/pneuma (breath of life) is similar to soul/psyche. Man is not "tri-partite".
