For me, the "new birth into a living hope" is a matter of the perspective that the knowledge that I am going to live eternally (even though I may die temporally) provides. It enables me to regard any difficulties encountered in this short life (including those experienced because of being a follower of Christ) as not worthy of comparison to the nature and duration of the blessings that I will receive. (Paul expressed this same thought in Romans 8:18.)
