What does the Bible say about Christians who sin even while trying to be righteous?

Isaiah 64:6

ESV - 6 We have all become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous deeds are like a polluted garment. We all fade like a leaf, and our iniquities, like the wind, take us away.

In this present life and world, Christians should be continually aware (as Paul was after his conversion) of the presence of sin in their lives (despite their ongoing efforts to grow in faith and obedience), and thus motivated by the indwelling Holy Spirit to repent of it and to seek God's forgiveness for Christ's sake (as Paul expressed in Romans 7:24-25).

Hi Anonymous, I would like to share that the Scripture that you referenced is under the Old Covenant and is speaking about the children of Israel who continuously sinned against God; however in the future they will receive God's salvation, which is in Christ Jesus.

I believe this is a picture of the weakness of the flesh, and our inability to keep the law. This is why we must keep our eyes on Jesus and His finished work on the cross.

As born again believers in Christ Jesus we are under the New Covenant of God's grace. The Old Testament was law-based and brought condemnation on the ones who transgressed against the commandments of God.

After the resurrection of Christ, we all, Jew and Gentile, have been brought into a new covenant of grace wherein there is no condemnation. See Romans 8:1.

I would also like to address the fact that our salvation doesn't come from us trying to be righteous. The righteousness of God has been imputed to us through Christ Jesus. It is not something that we can ever earn. It is a free gift.

Even Israel knew how sinful they were and knew that their salvation would come through God and God alone. Hence, Isaiah 64:6.

When we were born again, we received a new nature (new man) that has been created in righteousness and true holiness. Ephesians 4:24.

Our stance in Christ is complete; however our state is not perfect. We still have the flesh (sin nature) that wars against the Spirit.

The flesh is the soulish part of us, which is the mind, will and emotions. In Romans 12:2, it speaks about the renewing of the mind, which is a continual work of the Holy Spirit. It's called sanctification.

The Holy Spirit is at work within us and is changing our desires to do what pleases Him. See Philippians 2:13. He is the one who brings us into the place of total submission to His will.

The flesh wants to be in control, and so does the Holy Spirit; however it is the Holy Spirit who crucifies the flesh. This is the reason for the internal war within us that the Apostle Paul wrote about in Romans 7:7-25.

Please be encouraged and know that according to Philippians 1:6, "Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ."
