Why is the word "wages" used instead of the word "punishment" in the phrase "the wages of sin is death"?

We associate the word "wages" for rightful returns for work done. We associate the word "punishment" with sins committed. The word "wages" is peculiar on the context of sins.

Romans 6:23

ESV - 23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
