What can we learn from the contest on Mt. Carmel in 1 Kings 18?

In verse 27 when the prophets of Baal were not having any luck getting their fire started: "About noontime Elijah began mocking them. 'You'll have to shout louder, he scoffed, 'for surely he is a god! Perhaps he is deep in thought, or he is relieving himself. Or maybe he is away on a trip, or he is asleep and needs to be wakened!'"

1 Kings 18:20 - 40

ESV - 20 So Ahab sent to all the people of Israel and gathered the prophets together at Mount Carmel. 21 And Elijah came near to all the people and said, "How long will you go limping between two different opinions? If the Lord is God, follow him; but if Baal, then follow him." And the people did not answer him a word.

Idolatry has consequences, both in blinding people to the flaws in their viewpoint, and to the eternal result of that viewpoint.

Everyone must choose whom they will follow, and will be accountable for that choice.

Good question.

First, see the big picture:

The Triumph of Faith
Elijah on Mount Carmel. Carmel—the fruitful place: certainly fruitful for God.
1 Faith’s Challenge—he presented a fair challenge 1 Kings 18:24
2 Faith’s Confidence—he was certain his God would act. 1 Kings 18:30
3 Faith’s Communion—he ‘drew near’ to God 1 Kings 18:36-37
4 Faith’s Conquest—Elijah’s God answered by fire 1 Kings 18:38
Vindication of the true God 1 Kings 18:39
Destruction of the false prophets 1 Kings 18:40

Elijah threw down a WWF level taunt in verse 27 when the prophets of Baal were not having any luck getting their fire started: "About noontime Elijah began mocking them. 'You'll have to shout louder,' he scoffed, 'for surely he is a god! Perhaps he is deep in thought, or he is relieving himself. Or maybe he is away on a trip, or he is asleep and needs to be wakened!' Perhaps he is relieving himself?'" The prophet Elijah puts even Hulk Hogan's WWF taunt's to shame! :) [email protected]

By noon, Elijah was taunting the prophets of Baal because nothing had happened. “He who sits in the heavens shall laugh; the Lord shall hold them in derision” (Ps. 2:4 nkjv). --Warren Wiersbe
