There are really only three types of church government. Episcopalian, Presbyterian, and independent.

Episcopalians believe the church is governed by bishops who stand in a long line of inheritance from the apostles. Authority has been conferred by the laying on of hands going all the way back to Peter.

Presbyterians believe the church is governed by elders appointed by each church who meet together in a presbytery collectively decide the direction of the church.

Independents or congregationalists believe each church is independent and self-governing. They independently decide issues and the final decision is made by the membership.

All churches tend to fall into one of these categories, with Baptists in the last group.
