Both my parents had an issue with drunkenness so I’m at risk myself of becoming an alcoholic.

Christians are called to be filled with the Spirit and guided by God, rather than by substances made by man. “And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit” (Ephesians 5:18). It is not right for Christians to indulge in excessive alcohol because it interferes with the Spirit. Not only is drunkenness condemned in the Bible, but it is also associated with other sins of gluttony and lust.

Verses about drunkenness include:

Proverbs 20:1: “Wine is a mocker, strong drink a brawler, and whoever is led astray by it is not wise.” -- D. Miall Edwards

STRONG DRINK’S immediate effect is to make one oblivious of his misery; but ultimately it "biteth like a serpent, and stingeth like an adder," and leads to woe and sorrow (Prov. 23:29-32) and to poverty (Prov. 23:21; compare Pr. 21:17;); hence, wine is called a "mocker" deceiving the unwise (Prov. 20:1).

And a conscience more sensitive to the sinfulness of overindulgence is reflected in the denunciations of the prophets and the warning of the wise men (compare references, especially Isa. 5:11 f,22; 28:1-8; Prov. 23:29-33). --D. Miall Edwards

Proverbs 23:29-33 ESV: 
Who has woe? Who has sorrow? Who has strife? Who has complaining? Who has wounds without cause? Who has redness of eyes? Those who tarry long over wine; those who go to try mixed wine. Do not look at wine when it is red, when it sparkles in the cup and goes down smoothly. In the end it bites like a serpent and stings like an adder. Your eyes will see strange things, and your heart utter perverse things. 

So AVOID DRUNKENNESS (Pr. 23:29-35): A drunk does not care how bad it gets. He is always looking for another drink. H. Wilmington 

Galatians 5:19-21 ESV: 
Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. 

1 Corinthians 6:10: “Nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God.”

Romans 13:13 ESV: 
Let us walk properly as in the daytime, not in orgies and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and sensuality, not in quarreling and jealousy.

1 Peter 4:3-4: “For the time that is past suffices for doing what the Gentiles want to do, living in sensuality, passions, drunkenness, orgies, drinking parties, and lawless idolatry. With respect to this they are surprised when you do not join them in the same flood of debauchery, and they malign you.”

The references in Paul's writings are very numerous (Gal. 5:21; Eph. 5:18, et al.).

Consider the case of Noah: “Both his drunkenness and his nakedness were disgraceful, and the two often go together (Gen. 19:30-38; Hab. 2:15-16; Lam. 4:21). Alcohol isn’t a stimulant, it’s a narcotic; and when the brain is affected by alcohol, the person loses self-control. Warren Wiersbe

"Is the drunkard more stupid than other sinners? Hardly! All sins have short pleasure, great and long-lasting pain, and eternal judgment. Why do men love and continue in any sin? Is there hope for the drunkard? Certainly! All sinners may have great hope in the Lord Jesus Christ. Paul wrote, “O wretched man that I am! Who shall deliver me from the body of this death? I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord” (Rom 7:24-25)." letgodbetrue
