What’s the whole message behind this portion of Psalms 23:4? What does is mean that although we walk through the valley of death, we will not have to fear evil?

AMP - 1 THE LORD is my Shepherd [to feed, guide, and shield me], I shall not lack. 2 He makes me lie down in [fresh, tender] green pastures; He leads me beside the still and restful waters.

King David prayed for forgiveness, citing that he was a temporary resident on earth, as all his ancestors were. We all are like shadows. 1 Chronicles 29:15 1 Kings 11:36 says that the dark pagan world anticipated One who would come and be a light. In Luke 1:79 we find the Dawn from on high will visit to shine light to all who live in the shadow of death and give guidance to the way of peace. Without Jesus in our lives, we struggle in a difficult and confusing existence. Valleys are filled with crooked places. They can be rough, hard to navigate. Luke 3:5,6 The valley of the shadow of death looms everywhere around the earth. Take heart, we know that we have passed from death to life when we live in harmony with our brothers and sisters. When we love each other like Christ loved us, we live in light. 1 John 3:14 Psalm 91:1: "The one who lives under the protection of the Most High dwells in the shadow of the Almighty." He has passed through the valley of the shadow of death, and will have eternal life. 1 Corinthians 15:54: This human body will be transformed and become incorruptible.

I believe that the words of the psalmist are very comforting, and in my opinion it encourages me to know that when I am going through a dark time in my life or in a low place in my life, that I do not have to fear because the Lord is with me. I have the assurance of His Word and the presence of His Spirit to comfort me, no matter what I may have to go through in this life. Even in the midst of a life or death situation, I do not have to fear evil from the evil one, the devil! The Holy Spirit is always present and will guide us through difficult and adverse situations!

Psalm 23:4: Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Every child of God the Father should have discernment like David to be aware as they walk in life, going through a valley at all times that has a shadow over them. For then the Lord looks into the intents of the heart, and He tries His reins to give every man according to his ways and according to the fruit of his doings. (Jer 17:10) Having the right intents in our heart, Lord Jesus then leads us and “Is” our Shepherd, for in His hands are the deep places of the earth that lead us to His pasture being the sheep of His hand hearing His voice. (Psa 96:4,7) The valley, having a shadow of death, uses mankind to be provoked, which leads them to build exceeding wroth with the people who are around them. This leads to your pride, anger, and hatred, for then the evil spirit comes down upon you and takes control over you and leads you. (1 Sam 18:7-8,10) As David said, as the Lord liveth and as thy soul liveth for every child of God, there is a step between them and death. (1 Sam 20:3) This step is for every child of God whose “rod and staff” leads us to have the right discernment in humbleness that we go through, and to make the right decision to take the right “STEP.” The Lord is the discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart, and if we walk before Him as David walked in integrity of heart in uprightness to do according to all that he commands us and keep His statutes and his judgments, then He will be the Lord who “Is” our shepherd. (1 Kings 9:4) Do not let your greatness grow in your own wisdom that reaches heaven and then leads your dominion to the end of the earth. For then the branches shall be cut off and the tree will be hewn down with its leaves and the fruit being scattered, thus having his portion be with the beast of the field. (Dan 4:22-23) Jeremiah 17:8: For he shall be as a tree planted by the waters, and that spreadeth out her roots by the river, and shall not see when heat cometh, but her leaf shall be green; and shall not be careful in the year of drought, neither shall cease from yielding fruit.
