How can we know God truly loves us like John 3:16 says?

I would say that that question is answered in the same verse as cited by the questioner.

God (as a holy Being) could have left us estranged from Himself because of sin (our disobedience to Him), meaning that we would have to spend not just our earthly lifetimes, but all of eternity, separated from Him, which would have been the just consequence of that sin.

Instead, because He loved humanity so much, He sacrificed His own only-begotten, sinless Son (Jesus), and, through His unmerited suffering and death, laid on Him the eternal penalty for sin that each of us deserves. That sacrifice was then proven to be sufficient in God's view for that redemptive purpose by Jesus' subsequent resurrection from the dead to live eternally.

As a result, all humans who place their faith In Jesus' death and resurrection (rather than in their own imperfect righteousness and actions) also have the assurance of being able to spend eternity in God's presence.

As Paul summarized it in Romans 5:7-8: "Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous person, though for a good person someone might possibly dare to die. But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us."

We know God loves us because God's love has been poured out into our hearts by the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us (Romans 5:5).

The Act of Salvation
When we put our faith in Jesus Christ, our old life is crucified with Christ and we are born again by the Holy Spirit as a new creation. We experience this transformation as we are set free from the power of sin, death and all evil forces and experience the wisdom and power of the Holy Spirit developing this new life God has given us. This is God's love in action.

The Act of Revelation
The Holy Spirit opens our new spiritual eyes and heart to understand what God has revealed in the bible. We read God's promises to us as the expression of his deep abiding love for us. The bible shows us many different ways that God has expressed his love for his people in the past, and God does not change, his love is the same for us today.

The Act of Sovereignty
God demonstrates his love by his sovereign protection over of lives. He watches over us 24/7 to keep us safe so we can rest in his love. Nothing can thwart God's plan and purpose for our lives and his will is always good, pleasing and perfectly suited to us, as the expression of his love.

The Act of Mission
God brings us into his family and gives each of us an important role to play in fulfilling his mission in the world. The spiritual gifts of the Holy Spirit are all God's expression of love to us. God makes us ambassadors of Christ in the world, to share his love with this lost and dying world.

The Act of Relationship
God created every human being to have an intimate loving relationship with our creator. God initiates that relationship when he saves us. But we develop that relationship with God every day through the time we spend with him. We experience God's love in sweet communion with him as we study the bible, pray, worship, serve and share the gospel. The more engaged we are in demonstrating our love for God, the more amazing ways that God will lavish his love upon us.

There are a number of ways God shows us His love.
1. He came to dwell with us and show His love for us by healing, deliverance from evil, feeding us with His words and wisdom, encouraging us of His provision and many other blessings.
2. The greatest example of His love was shown at Calvary by His sacrificial death and resurrection to free us from sin and thereby allow us not only a joyful life on earth but also an eternity in His wonderful presence.
3. His love for us is shown daily in the beauty of His creation.
4. Many prophecies in the bible which testify of His love for us through bad and good times.
5. His continual shepherding of us through life's ups and downs.

What a mighty God we serve, praise His wonderful Holy name.
