NKJV - 16 Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law but by faith in Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Christ Jesus, that we might be justified by faith in Christ and not by the works of the law; for by the works of the law no flesh shall be justified.

We are justified by our faith in the finished work of Jesus on the cross, as explained in the quoted verse. The good works that Christians do to fulfill the will of God in our lives, “proves and demonstrates” that our faith is “genuine and authentic”. A person may claim to be a Christian but on examination, nothing in their life demonstrates that their faith is real. When our belief in Jesus is genuine (from the heart) we are be born again by the Holy Spirit as a brand new person. Our lives will begin to show the image of Jesus to the world, like a good tree bears good fruit. We can never justify ourselves before a holy God. We are saved by God’s grace as a gift which we receive by faith. But we are saved for a purpose and that’s what Jesus wants us to show to the world.
Thelma, I will give you an answer by what the Bible says and not an opinion. James 2:24 "Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only." To be saved we are told to BELIEVE, REPENT, CONFESS- that Jesus is the Son of God, died and was risen from the dead, and be BAPTIZED for the remission of sins, is a command of Jesus and taught by the Apostles. They are acts of submission, God does the WORK- Colossians 2:11-12 " 11In him you were also circumcised with a circumcision not performed by human hands. Your whole self ruled by the flesh was put off when you were circumcised by Christ, 12having been buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised with him through your faith in the working of God, who raised him from the dead."
