Exodus 34:6
The Lord, the Lord,
A God merciful and gracious,
Slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness,
Keeping steadfast love for the thousandth generation,
Forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, yet by no means clearing the guilty, but visiting the iniquity of the parents upon the children and the children’s children, to the third and the fourth generation.”

The way we learned it at Dallas Seminary was that there are 2 types of attributes, communicable and incommunicable.

INCOMMUNICABLE ATTRIBUTES (unique to God)

Aseity (Self-Existence, Independence)
Exodus 3:14 – “God said to Moses, ‘I AM WHO I AM.’”
John 5:26 – “For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son also to have life in himself.”

Eternity
Psalm 90:2 – “From everlasting to everlasting you are God.”
Revelation 1:8 – “I am the Alpha and the Omega,” says the Lord God... who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.”

Immutability (Unchangeableness)
Malachi 3:6 – “For I the LORD do not change...”
James 1:17 – “...with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change.”

Divine Simplicity (God is not composed of parts)
Deuteronomy 6:4 – “Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one.”
John 4:24 – “God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.”

Omnipotence (All-Powerful)
Jeremiah 32:17 – “Ah, Lord GOD!... Nothing is too hard for you.”
Matthew 19:26 – “With God all things are possible.”

Omniscience (All-Knowing)
Psalm 147:5 – “Great is our Lord, and abundant in power; his understanding is beyond measure.”
1 John 3:20 – “...God is greater than our heart, and he knows everything.”

Omnipresence (Everywhere Present)
Psalm 139:7–10 – “Where shall I go from your Spirit? Or where shall I flee from your presence?...”
Jeremiah 23:24 – “Do I not fill heaven and earth? Declares the LORD.”

Incorporeality (Spirit / Not Material)
John 4:24 – “God is spirit...”
1 Timothy 1:17 – “To the King of the ages, immortal, invisible, the only God...”

Impassibility (Not subject to emotional change like humans)
Numbers 23:19 – “God is not man, that he should lie, or a son of man, that he should change his mind.”
Acts 14:15 – “...we also are men, of like nature with you...,” implying God is not.

Impeccability (Cannot sin)
Habakkuk 1:13 – “You who are of purer eyes than to see evil...”
Titus 1:2 – “...God, who never lies...”

COMMUNICABLE ATTRIBUTES (shared, in some degree, with humans)

Holiness
Isaiah 6:3 – “Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of hosts...”
1 Peter 1:16 – “You shall be holy, for I am holy.”

Justice / Righteousness

Titus 1:2 – “...God, who never lies...”

Goodness / Omnibenevolence

Grace

Romans 3:24 – “...justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus.”

Love
1 John 4:8 – “Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love.”
John 3:16 – “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son...”

Mercy
Exodus 34:6 – “The LORD, the LORD, a God merciful and gracious...”
Lamentations 3:22-23 – “The steadfast love of the LORD never ceases; his mercies never come to an end...”

Patience / Longsuffering
2 Peter 3:9 – “The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise... but is patient toward you...”
Romans 2:4 – “...God’s kindness and forbearance and patience...”

Immanence (Active involvement in creation)
Acts 17:27–28 – “...he is actually not far from each one of us, for ‘In him we live and move and have our being’...”
Psalm 145:18 – “The LORD is near to all who call on him...”

Transcendence (Above and beyond creation)
