Why did Jesus ask Simon Peter to feed his lambs and then ask him to feed his sheep? Is there a difference between a lamb and a sheep concerning the faith?
John 21:15
ESV - 15 When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, "Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these?" He said to him, "Yes, Lord; you know that I love you." He said to him, "Feed my lambs.

Peter, due to his fear, denied Jesus three times on the night of his arrest. Jesus had gathered his disciples for a seaside barbecue after Peter had once again denied Jesus by saying “I go fishing” which was returning to the life he had before meeting Jesus. Since he was the leader by the fact that he was a married man and the rest of the disciples were teenaged boys, they all also forgot about the resurrection and went with him. Jesus had to repeat himself three times because Peter was a hardheaded quitter. Also, I think Jesus was giving Peter a little good natured ribbing about the fact that he denied Jesus three times in one evening. Remember, these professional fishermen were so out of fellowship with God that they couldn’t catch a single fish until Jesus gave them the counter intuitive instructions to cast their nets on the shoreside of their boats. Then they almost sank the boats because of the great weight of the catch. Also notice that Jesus had fish cooking on the grill before they brought in their catch, basically showing them that their efforts were unacceptable and they needed to get back to following him.
