Andy, the situation that you describe is a real test of the Christian's belief that God does indeed cause all things to work together for good to those who love Him and whom He has called (Romans 8:28), even when that good may not be immediately apparent to us.

In such a situation, I would first come before God in prayer with thanksgiving for all the blessings that I still have. (For a Christian, this would include first and foremost (in my opinion) the salvation and eternal life that God has made possible in Christ.)

I would then do an inventory of my known shortcomings and faults, and ask God for His forgiveness of them for Jesus' sake.

After that, I would enumerate all my concerns and worries before Him (including not just myself, but (as you indicated) the needs of others who are depending on me), and make the request (if it is applicable) in Jesus' name for the specific relief from the situation that I am seeking -- if that would involve a particular kind of job, or work in a specific field, or any other such circumstance. I would have confidence to come before God's presence in this way, because the Bible has instructed me to have such faith and boldness (for example, Ephesians 3:12; Hebrews 4:16; 1 Peter 5:6-7; and 1 John 5:14).

I would also ask God for guidance to open my eyes to ways in which He might open doors or create possibilities for me with regard to my situation that I might miss, especially if they do not immediately "fit" with a "preferred" solution that I might have in mind.

Finally, I would indicate a willingness to submit to His omniscient and loving will for me, whatever that will might be.

Having come to God in prayer, I would then make a conscious effort to assure that I am doing all that I can on my part (as I am sure you also would) to achieve my objective, while always (as I mentioned earlier) remaining alert to all possible resources, opportunities, or forms of assistance that God might put at my disposal.
