Why aren't people reading the bible anymore? How can people know God, but not know the Bible?

I notice many in the church do not know scripture. Nor do they open the bible.  After carefully questioning many who love God, I find that people don't have time in their busy and hectic schedule to turn to God's word as often as they would like.  So the question remains, if the flock of the church doesn't read the bible and spend time basking in The Lord, then how do they know God? I'm seeing this more and more, people relying on their own understanding instead of God's word.
