Here are the secrets I have learned:
1. Know we are saved
Until we know that we are saved, that all of our sins - past, present and future - have been forgiven, we cannot have a close relationship with God. That ability to know is called faith which comes from studying the word of God - the bible. The bible clearly tells us how to get saved and how to be fully assured that we are.

2. Know we are loved
God saved us through Jesus sacrifice on the cross, because he loves us so much. God saved us in order to lavish his love upon us every day. Once we discover and remember all the promises of God from the bible then we know how much God loves us. Every time we trust in those promises we experience (feel) God's love for us.

3. Know how much we need God
When we come to faith in Christ, but then focus on living the Christian faith "our own way" in "our own strength", we will never have a close walk with God, because he opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble. We become humble once we learn that God has supplied everything we have and need for life. We can take credit for nothing - it all comes from him. So when our lives become filled with praise and thanksgiving every day, for all that God has done for us, then God is pleased to reveal his presence to us.

4. Know that we can do nothing without God
God created us with incredible human potential for this life. When that potential is infused by the presence of the Holy Spirit in us - giving wisdom, guidance and power - there is nothing we can't accomplish to bless and restore the world that God created, and nothing we can't accomplish to expand the kingdom of God upon the earth. God longs to walk through every situation in life with us, to fulfill that potential - at work, home, play, church - wherever and whenever.

The bible is one big love letter written to us and signed in blood by Jesus Christ. In my view, we will be having the closest relationship with God, when the following are true:

1. The Lord God Almighty is our Abba Father, our Daddy. When we can approach God the Father every day, like a young child relates to their daddy, then we have a very close relationship.

2. The Lord Jesus Christ is our best friend
Jesus is our personal Saviour. He has the right to be the Lord of our life. When we surrender to his leadership and we learn from him, just like the first disciples in the bible, we become the best of friends. Jesus goal is to develop his character into our lives, so we can have the most abundantly fulfilling and deeply satisfying life possible.

3. The Holy Spirit is my teacher and guide for life
When we begin to hear the Spirit's voice and follow his guidance he is pleased to open our eyes and hearts to understand the bible and to know God's plan for our life. He will help us complete all the good works that God has prepared in advance for us to do, that will transform the world we live in.
