Ashtaroth (plural) or Ashtoreth (singular), a goddess of sexual passion and fertility (the Canaanites' principal female deity who was supposedly embodied in the moon) was typically portrayed as a naked woman (very similar to the familiar images of Venus), occasionally with a crescent moon on her brow. Ashtoreth was closely associated with the Egyptian Isis, the Babylonian and Assyrian Ishtar, the Greek Aphrodite and the Roman Venus. Thus, she was worshiped with the most perverted forms of sexual immorality. Bible forbids nakedness. Thy nakedness be not discovered - Ex. 20:26b. God demands modesty of all His people (Php. 4:5; 1Tim. 2:9- 10; 1Pet. 3:3).

After Adam and Eve sinned, they had a sense of shame. That was why they covered themselves with fig leaves. Nudity needs to be covered. When I was living in another country and had no problem with the language but not the entire culture there, I didn't understand the vulgarity spoken, I wasn't offended even when it was uttered. In my own country where I grow up with the language and the cultural background, I am extremely offended when I hear and understand any foul language hurled. So after sin enters into men, we feel shameful when we are naked because sin makes us feel so. Our conscience will enable us to know that we need to cover our nakedness.

Find this image of clothing as a symbol of God’s mercy and redemption throughout the Old and New Testaments. See, for example, Psalm 45:13, 14 and Revelation 19:8. On the other hand, from Genesis 3 onward Scripture seems to make it clear that, except in the case of sexual activity, it’s a shameful thing to “uncover one’s nakedness” (Genesis 9:20-27; Leviticus 18:6-18). Indeed, the reasoning here seems to be that nakedness is inseparably connected with sexual activity. This is exactly how the Jewish people have viewed public nudity throughout their long history.

The terms nudity and naked are referenced about 104 times in the Bible. Today's world is culture conscious, much like it was in the time of the book of Judges in the Bible. Judges 2:25..."everyone did what was right in His own eyes." Basically we might say, "who cares as long as I don't hurt anyone!" But do we stop to consider what does my behavior say? James 4:4,.."Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God?" Exodus 28:42 - The priests in Moses day were living in an atmosphere of sexually preoccupied worship. The priests of God were to wear breeches (trousers). Exodus 39:28, Leviticus 6:10,& 16:4, and Ezekiel 44:18 also address this issue. Clothing before God was a matter of respect. Yes, I know that Adam and Eve were naked. But remember God clothed them, after they had sinned and realized they were naked. Before God we are all naked! He knows each one of us, completely! 1Samuel 16:7, God looks at our hearts, our motives for doing what we do. He knows how we think! Deuteronomy 6:2 says that we are to respect God. We are to submit to His will. We are to consult Him. Listen to Him. Remember God never changes! Proverbs 3:13-15, declares that the man who finds wisdom is happy. Wisdom is so precious that nothing compares to it. Proverbs 22:3, "A prudent man forsees evil and hides himself, but the simple pass on and are punished." There is no wisdom in being reckless. Like 8:21, Jesus answered and said, " My mother and My brothers are these who hear the word of God and do it." Believers are God'sfamily! Colossians 4:5, "Let your gentleness be known...the Lord is at hand." We are at all times to be considerate of others. Especially the Lord God. Ephesians 4:1,2. We are to walk in a worthy manner. We are to (try) to match the Excellency of Christ's calling. - indeed, the priests in Moses day were to don breeches! Today we are Jesus bondservants! 1Timothy 6:1, Believing in Him we should respect His sacrifice. He has clothed us in righteousness! He washed us with His very blood! He walks with us every day! Are we worthy? Our actions represent Christ to all who see us. Robert Moffet, spent 30 years in Africa, he wrote -- " My album is a savage breast Where sorrow reigns and darkness rests Without one ray of light to write the name of Jesus there To speak of world's both bright and fair And see that savage bow in prayer - Is all my souls delight! 1Thessalonians 5:21, "Test all things and hold fast to what is good." GOD IS GOOD! ALL THE TIME!
