To understand why David was a man after God's own heart, we need to see what characteristics he had to qualify for such an exalted description. In the book of Acts, the Apostle Paul is speaking bef...

One of the greatest signs of David's integrity is when he found Saul and his men sleeping. He could have killed Saul and launched himself to the throne. But he trusted God and believed in waiting on the Lord and did not take things in to his own hands. What a lesson that is for all of us. Not to take what God has given before the time He has appointed for it to be. We want to run ahead of God like Abraham did and produce our own good. But when we do we create folly instead of the plan God has for us. David depended on God, believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness. When God is on the throne of our lives, we will wait upon Him, and not run ahead. David had humble beginnings as a shepherd boy. But he watched over the sheep as though they were the children of God and protected them as though it was his only duty. David did not always do right, but he wanted to. His heart was toward God even though he was still flesh. David knew his strength came from God. David was a man after Gods own heart. It was his love for God that made him want to serve Him with all of his heart.
1 Samuel 16:7: But the Lord said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the Lord seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, “but the Lord looketh on the heart.” David was the least among his brothers, who guarded and looked after his father's flock in the “Sheepcote,” as a shepherd, guarding and leading them to be fed at Beth’-le-hem. The Spirit of the Lord that stands with mankind, knowing how one is led in wisdom through their heart, having deceit, or humbleness, is then guided in wisdom. The Spirit of the Lord came upon David, who walked in integrity of heart and in uprightness, having humbleness in him. The Lord was then with him, for He sought him to be “a man after His own heart.” He was a mighty, valiant man of war, prudent in matters, and a “comely person,” for the Lord was with him. David was prudent in speech, with the right wisdom given to him. He acted and behaved wisely in all his ways, for knowing the Lord God was, and is with him to deliver him not by his might and power, but of God the Father. The Lord then chose him to be the ruler as a shepherd and to be a “Sheepcote” over His chosen people, of Israel. (1 Sam 13:14/16:18/17:15,24:3/2 Sam 7:8,15) The evidence of the kingdom that shall not endure was first revealed to Samuel, even though he was sent to anoint Saul to be a King. This evidence reveals to us that Saul failed to hearken to the voice of the words of the Lord spoken to him. (1 Sam 14:37,43/15:1,9-11,22,24) God the Father reveals to us that Saul obeyed not His voice but feared and obeyed the people’s voice. The evidence of David being sought as a man, of God the Father’s creation, knowing the sinful nature of mankind, was led in humility, and was a man who had the heart of God to forgive. Saul sought in many ways to kill David, for a time came when he was told that David was in the wilderness of En-ge’-di. He came to the sheepcotes, where there was a cave, and Saul rested in the cave. David and his men were by the cave, and “his men ignited him,” as the Lord said I will deliver thine enemy into thine hand. David arose and cut off the skirt of Saul’s robe, but his heart smote him. When Saul rose up and went out of the cave, David arose after him and cried out to him. (1 Sam 24:4-5,10) Saul cried out to David, "I have rewarded thee evil, thou hast dealt well with me. If a men find his enemy, will he let him go well away, wherefore the Lord reward the good for that thou hast done unto me today." David was then chosen to give us this understanding. This revelation given to us reveals how David was then considered a man after God’s own heart. Seeing the nature of mankind that is revealed to us, the Lord God is the “discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.” David was then taken, who was after “God’s own Heart,” from the sheepcote, and was to be a ruler over His people of Israel. The Spirit of the Lord descended from heaven like a dove and abode upon David, as John the Baptist revealed unto us of our Lord Jesus. (Heb 4:12/1 Sam 16:13/John 1:32) John 10:1,14,27" Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that entereth not by the door into the sheepfold, but climbeth up some other way, the same is a thief and a robber. I am the good shepherd, and know my sheep, and am known of mine. My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.
