I find Ezekiel 18:24 (NIV) very helpful when sin starts to creep in:

"But if a righteous person turns from their righteousness and commits sin and does the same detestable things the wicked person does, will they live? None of the righteous things that person has done will be remembered. Because of the unfaithfulness they are guilty of and because of the sins they have committed, they will die."

Followed by Exodus 14:14 - "The LORD will fight for you; you need only to be still."

I'm sure that others can also suggest verses that have helped them in this regard, but the ones that I have found most useful to remember or invoke have been:

Deuteronomy 6:13, which Jesus Himself (in Matthew 4:10 and Luke 4:8) quoted to Satan (just as He cited other Scripture verses to Satan each time He was tempted), which illustrates the power of knowledge of God's word in resisting and rebuking the devil, and also reminds me that it is only God that I should worship and serve.

Luke 22:42-44, which reminds me that, if even Jesus, who was perfectly committed to doing the Father's will, could ask that the cup of suffering that He was about to drink be removed from Him (but only if God was willing to do so), and could be in agony about it to the point of sweating blood, then God will not look with disapproval upon me for expressing my own fears and uncertainties about the possible difficulty of doing His will, but will strengthen me in the same way that He strengthened Jesus in the garden and throughout the suffering that lay ahead of Him. 

Romans 5:8, which reminds me that God loved me enough, even when I was still His enemy, to give His Son to die for me, and that I owe God my love and obedience in grateful response.

I Corinthians 10:13, which reminds me that, no matter how severe a temptation may seem, it is something that others have faced and overcome, and that God has promised to keep me from being tempted beyond what I can bear, and also to provide a way for me to escape the temptation, which I then ask God to show me (if He has not already made it apparent). 

Hebrews 4:15, which indicates that Jesus was tempted in all respects in the same way that I am, and yet was able to resist and overcome those temptations without sinning, and is alive today to intercede for me, and to help me when I call on Him.

I like Peter's response in Matthew 14:30. Only 3 words to remember.

"Lord, save me." 

Peter couldn't walk on water (ie live the spiritual life) because he took his eyes off Jesus.

When he cries out to Jesus, the Lord immediately reached out his hand and caught hold of him.

When facing temptation we need Jesus to grab hold of us to keep us from "falling" or "drowning" in sin.

Oftentimes, we find ourselves facing temptation because we are trying to lives on our own and have taken our eyes off Jesus.

Galatians 5:16: "walk by the Spirit, and you will not carry out the desire of the flesh."


Romans 8:13 " if by the Spirit you are putting to death the deeds of the body, you will live."

When tempted these verses remind me that I need to give it to God and let the spirit do the work in me. I find that white-knuckling it doesn't really help. I have to thank God for his spirit and start walking in the Spirit.

My personal favorite that helped me overcome voices and insecurities in my early walk: "Rule thou in the midst of thine enemies" (Psalms 110:2).

Another easy one to remember: "Resist the devil, and he will flee from you." (James 4:7)

This is my go-to Scripture I quote to myself all the time: "Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way? By taking heed thereto according to thy word." (Psalms 119:9) and I like verse 11 too: "Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee." (Psalms 119:11)

"Flee youthful lusts..." (2 Timothy 2:22)

"(For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;) Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;" (2 Corinthians 10:4-5)

"For this is the will of God, even your sanctification, that ye should abstain from fornication: That every one of you should know how to possess his vessel in sanctification and honour." (1 Thessalonians 4:3-4)

There's so many, but I'll leave you with one more to point you to the grace of God that helps us overcome: "Thou therefore, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus." (2 Timothy 2:1) When we're tempted in any aspect, all we have to do is lean on His grace.
