It is believed that the teachings of the book of Proverbs are practical wisdom collected by godly people including king Solomon and others. As the title suggests (Pro. 1:1), it is written by a king, who himself is a son of king, for people to live a kingly life. The purpose of the Proverbs is mentioned in verses 1-6 of chapter one and begins with indirect mention of the Ten Commandments: "the fear of the LORD" in 1:7 refers to the first four commandments, Hearing and not forsaking the teachings of parents in 1:8-9 refer to the fifth commandment. And in 1:10-19 the instruction not to party with murderers begins with murder and ends with people of greed (covetousness). It refers to last five commandments which start with murder and end with covetousness.

It is said that the book of Psalms leads us to worship God, perhaps in the gathering of a congregation, but Proverbs leads us to a godly living in the world. But both start with law of the Lord.

The Proverbs, though a collection of practical wisdom by different people, is completely in tune with the rest of the Bible in theology and faith. It is often quoted in the New Testament, may be supremely by our Lord in the Lord's prayer "Give us this day our daily bread" (Mt. 5:11) which refers to Prov. 30:8-9.

The collection is done by the godly people in different times and places but we believe that God the Holy Spirit is the ultimate author of the book of Proverbs also, like the rest of the Bible..
