I believe what Elisabeth Eliot once said; it's really very simple: Whatever you do, plumber, student, janitor, doctor,... be the best plumber, student, janitor, doctor,... you can possibly be. Colossians 3 ESV, 17 And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.
God has given us some very clear instructions in His Word as to how we are to live for Him. These include the command to love one another (John 13:34-35), the call to follow Him at the cost of denying our own desires (Matthew 16:24), the exhortation to care for the poor and needy (James 1:27), and the warning to not fall into sinful behaviors like those who don’t know God (1 Thessalonians 5:6-8). Jesus summed up a life lived for God when a teacher of the law asked Him the most important of commandments. Jesus replied, “Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength. The second is this: Love your neighbor as yourself. There is no commandment greater than these” (Mark 12:29-31).
To live for God, is to daily ask for the grace to live in the spirit and to avoid gratifying the flesh for any reason,in accordance to the word of God in Gal.5:16. It involves our conscious effort to walk in line, in obedience and submission to the expressed will of God. It involves confessing every sin that the Holy Spirit has revealed to us wether against God or man. Satan tempts us through our wrong habits, desires, envy, jealousy, and wicked ambition, but God has given us an escape route in His word "" resist the devil and he will flee from you. 1 Peter 5:7.
Seek first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added to you (Matt.6:33). You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul and with all your mind(Matt.22:37). Do not be conformed to this world. But be transformed by renewing your mind that you prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God(Rom. 12:2). If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness(1John1:9). Those who love God,to those who are called according to His purpose (Rom.8:28) Those are some of the scripture verses that are aptly suited to the answer to the question. God has a plan and purpose in our life. For this purpose, we must be godly. Being godly means living a life that pleases God—acting justly, loving mercy, and walking humbly with him. The key, though, is the walking part. It's only when we walk with God in a relationship with him that we're able to do what's right and what is good. Delight yourself in the Lord,he shall give you the desires of your heart(Ps.37:4). Finally, dear brothers and sisters,we urge you in the name of the Lord Jesus to live in a way that pleases God, as we have taught you. You live this way already, and we encourage you to do so even more(1Thes..4:1 NLT).
