Matthew 6:11 "Give us this day our daily bread"

When we pray "Give us this day our daily bread", immediately all or some think of our daily necessities such as food. Let's look at it from two different angles, I will share one angle today and then another tomorrow.

I believe the first thing the bible addresses in reference to "our daily bread" is God's word. Matthew 4:4, "But He answered and said, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread (physical) alone, but by every word (spiritual bread) that proceeds from the mouth of God".

There is nothing wrong praying for our daily needs, the question is, what comes first? Jesus also said according to John 6:57-58, "As the living Father sent Me, and I live because of the Father, so he who feeds on Me will live because of Me. 58 This is the bread which came down from heaven—not as your fathers ate the manna, and are dead. He who eats this bread will live forever.” His word is Him (John 1), and His word is about Him. Hebrews 10:7, "Then I said, ‘Behold, I have come—In the volume of the book it is written of Me—To do Your will, O God.’”

To desire Him more than anything else is to desire His word. 1Peter 2:2, "As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby". Job tells us, "I have not departed from the commandment of His lips; I have treasured the words of His mouth More than my necessary food”, Job 23:12, 2Timothy 2:15, "Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth". His word gives us a correct understanding of who He is and teaches us how to relate to Him. Without the word, how would I know Him and love Him.

What we pray for first determines what we desire the most. Upon looking at "Give us this day our daily bread" one time, it reversed everything I ever understood about this verse and began to pray a different prayer to God to give me His word as my daily bread. The desire to treasure His word, study it. And I have come to cherish even more His word and refuse to go a day without reading it even if it's for a short time. I cherish His word that I listen to teachings and preaching of His word every day because His word is precious to me. Just as I need natural food for sustenance, I need spiritual food for spiritual sustenance.

The desire of the word comes from Him and we have to pray to Him to give us that desire (an appetite) for His word daily. To read it with understanding, and the Holy Spirit to help us apply it to our lives. I not only want to thank God for the food, I want to thank Him for the appetite and the taste of it.

What is God's word to you? What would you pray for first? Do you read it daily or wait until you are in church to read it? Are you daily feeding on His word by reading it, listening to SOUND teachings and preaching of His TRUE word or do you wait for Sunday morning service? When Jesus said, "Give us this day, our daily bread" and "...tomorrow will worry about itself". He is not telling us not to pray for our future but rather we should make sure that our today is something to write home about- I mean good, so as to make the best our glorious future. For He knows that we worrying about our tomorrow will spilled us up from effective concentration which will likely help us. To God be the Glory. Amen
