It means a statement of our recognition of the Kingdom of Heaven and our Father in Heaven is the one and only source for us, the children of God (John 1: 12-13) to fulfill our daily needs, and we will never go off and worship other gods as the idol worshipers do for their daily needs (Mathew 4: 8-10).

If we meditate on the Lord's Prayer (Mathew 6: 9-13), beside it is taught us how we should pray. This is a genuine creed taught by Jesus to all of his disciples and to all of us, the believers and followers of Jesus.

The portion of the prayer which our Lord taught us (vide Mt 6:11) as per the Syriac version is 'Haab laan lahmo d'sunkonaan yawmono' and it means " Give us the bread we need for this day."

The concern of a true believer is for his bread just for this day. He is not concerned about his bread for tomorrow or the day after tomorrow and so on. If he is alive tomorrow he can very well pray tomorrow for the bread he would need for tomorrow.and the Heavenly Father would provide him with the bread he would need for tomorrow. That is to say the prayer for the bread for tomorrow is due only tomorrow.

Thus our concern should be only for today's bread.

What does it mean to pray for our daily bread?

Praying for "our daily bread" in the Lord's Prayer means asking God to provide for our essential, day-to-day needs—physical, emotional, and spiritual—while fostering a spirit of humble dependence, gratitude, and trust in His provision. It is a daily request that focuses on present needs rather than anxiety about the future.

A breakdown of what this petition entails:

Physical Provision & Sustenance: It covers necessities like food, clothing, and shelter, acknowledging that God is the source of all we need to live.

Spiritual Nourishment: It refers to seeking God's grace, wisdom, and strength for the day, as well as feeding on the "Word of God" and the Eucharist.

Daily Dependence, Not Hoarding: The focus on "daily" implies a constant, day-to-day reliance on God, similar to the Israelites receiving manna in the desert.

Responsibility to Others: This prayer includes a commitment to ensuring that our neighbours also have enough to eat, highlighting a community-focused, rather than selfish, request.

Trust Over Worry: It serves as a reminder to trust God's care rather than panic about future needs or personal, financial, or status concerns.

Spiritual Nourishment:

The Bread of Life: Many interpret this as a request for spiritual food, specifically Jesus Christ, who referred to himself as the "Bread of Life".

Word of God: It can signify a daily need for the Scriptures and the Holy Spirit to sustain the soul.

Matt 6:11 "Give us this day our daily bread."

In referring to our daily bread, Jesus likely meant our immediate needs. Thus, he went on to show how God clothes the wildflowers, and then he said: "Will he not much rather clothe you, you with little faith? So never be anxious and say,... ‘What are we to wear?’” He concluded by repeating this important advice: "Never be anxious about the next day." Matt. 6:30-34 This shows that rather than being materialistic, we should be content with our basic daily needs.

Jesus' reference to our daily bread should remind us of our need for spiritual food. "Man must live," said our Master, "not on bread alone, but on every word that comes from God's mouth." (Matt. 4:4) So we should continue to pray that God will keep on feeding us with timely spiritual food.

By making this prayerful request, we ask God to provide the necessary food "for this day." This indicates that we have faith in Jehovah's ability to meet our daily needs. It is not a prayer for surplus provisions. This request for our daily needs may remind us that God commanded the Israelites to gather manna "each his amount day by day."—Ex. 16:4.

"Give us today our bread for this day." (Matthew 6:11) This is not a request for material wealth. Jesus encouraged us to pray for "our bread for the day according to the day's requirement." (Luke 11:3) In harmony with the Lord's Prayer, we can pray in faith that God will provide for our daily needs if we love and obey him.

Our prayer for daily bread should also remind us of our need for daily spiritual food. Although very hungry after a long fast, Jesus resisted Satan's temptation to turn stones into bread, saying: "It is written, ’But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God. Matthew 4:4 ESV

We should also seek God's continued help, for the Devil will return to tempt us at another time convenient for him—and not necessarily when we may be expecting a temptation. Hence, we must remain alert at all times, ready to persevere in rendering sacred service to Jehovah regardless of the tests we must face.
