Are we forced to serve God?

It is said that we are not forced to serve God at all. However if we want to go to heaven there's no other way. God gives us a choice to choose between heaven or hell, but if we don't serve him then we are sent to hell after death. So I want to know why, because it seems we don't have much of a choice.
