I am going through something when it comes to memorization of scriptures. Though, daily, most days, I read and study the bible, I pray. I have actually made specific prayers and petitions to the Lord regarding the assignments over my life and how memorization of scriptures would be most beneficial to me. I have hundreds of index cards with the scriptures written on them. I've even used the strategy of learning one scripture a day and then a week.

Though I have many memorized, still not as many as I believe I should memorized considering my daily diet of God's word. I do not know where you are in your walk and journey with God, but I am by faith coming out of my valley place, and entering into a new level of faith!

This is what I heard from the Lord during one of my pleas to him about memorization of scriptures- without, going into all the details that I consider to be between me and God, he said to me: 'There are many who read the word, holding head knowledge and memorization of scriptures and they do not know me. It is one thing to have knowledge, but another to have revelation and relationship with me (God). Many believe because they have scriptures in memory they are qualified to teach or begin or complete assignments. Without revelation and relationship with God they are fooling only themselves.

The Lord also told me that as I continue to walk with him he will continue to reveal himself to me as memorization will come in time. I accept this answer and do my best to be patient. Yet, more often I am tempted, when I am in discussion with other believers of Christ, I run into those who want me to prove what I speak by the exact scripture, even though I speak principles that are made clear by the things I speak, that I have relationship with God, and speak according to his word. I must say to you, usually they are the ones who are seeking for debate, the very ones Paul warned we should do our best to stay away from debates with these types, because it is a sign of their pride and the debates and arguments does not promote unity, but division. Does not advance the church, but places it at a disadvantage.

God is faithful, and he said he will save us and place his word in our minds and write them on the tablets of our hearts. Believe him at his word!
I believe there are steps we go through along the way with our journey with God. Memorization of scriptures will come, have faith, take steps to do the things it takes for you to reach your goals, and lean on God he will help you, just as he is aiding me.

Bible memorization helps believers to resist temptation. When Jesus was tempted by Satan in the wilderness (Matthew 4:1-11), all three of His responses included quotes from Scripture.

Bible memorization follows the example of Jesus. As mentioned above, Jesus quoted Scripture to resist temptation. In addition, He often cited Scripture in His teachings, including during the Sermon on the Mount and in His responses to the teachers of the law.

How can a Christian motivate himself to memorize Scripture? Jesus is our example (1 Peter 2:21, “Christ [was] leaving us an example, that you should follow His steps.”)

Jesus, as Thou with Satan didst contend,
And didst the victory win,
O give us strength in Thee to fight,
In Thee to conquer sin.

As Thou didst hunger bear, and thirst,
So teach us, gracious Lord,
To die to self, and chiefly live
By Thy most holy Word.
