What does "gird up your loins" mean?

“Now gird up your loins like a man,
 And I will ask you, and you instruct Me!

Job 38:3

ESV - 3 Dress for action like a man; I will question you, and you make it known to me.

"Gird thyself" is mentioned several times in both the new and old testiment. In my studies the word means to "tighten your belt, brace yourself, protect yourself" and even "cover thyself." I think it means to cover and or protect yourself.
