I think that it means that to be a follower of Christ, we must put Him above all else. As Jesus said, "My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me." John 10:27 "He who loves His life will lose it, and He who hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life. If anyone serves Me, let him follow Me; and where I am, there My servant will be also. If anyone serves Me, him my Father will honor." John 12:25,26 "If anyone comes to Me and does not hate his father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, yes, and his own life also, he cannot be my My disciple." Luke 14:26 "Do not think that I came to bring peace on earth. I did not come to bring peace but a sword.
