Is there any scriptural basis for praying for the unsaved?

Yes, and thank the Lord there is.

I Timothy 2:1-6
"First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions and thanksgiving be made for ALL people, for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way. This is good, and it is pleasing in the sight of God our Saviour, WHO DESIRES ALL PEOPLE TO BE SAVED AND TO COME TO THE KNOWLEDGE OF THE TRUTH...".

Jesus died so all will have a right to the tree of life:

John 3:16-17
"For God so loved the WORLD that He gave His only begotten son that whosever believes in Him should be saved. He did not come into the world to condemn the world BUT that the world through him might be saved."

We are all sinners saved by the Grace of God!

My opinion is that we are to pray for unsaved people to become saved. If we pray for unsaved friends and relatives, for other things, such as good health, a good job, etc. If they get those things they and we pray for, they may think they are okay & that they don't have to become saved.

We have the authority to pray for all for the advancement of the Kingdom. The kindness of God leads to repentance. Romans 2:4 (NASB) Do you think lightly of the riches of His kindness and tolerance and patience, not knowing that the kindness of God leads you to repentance?

I once heard a widow's story. At bedtime, a husband--after reading about the love of Jesus, prayed, with his wife, for salvation...

He died in his sleep that night.

I wept...

Jesus' love is stronger than all of His creation put together. It is infinite. And we should pray for all; we should pray for anyone we know and care about who have not committed to Christ... The Bible tells us that!

"Those who oppose him he must gently instruct, in the hope that God will give them a change of heart leading them to a knowledge of the truth,"
(2 TIMOTHY 2:25) NIV
