Why did the Pharisees ask Jesus about divorce in Matthew 19:3?

AMP - 3 And Pharisees came to Him and put Him to the test by asking, Is it lawful and right to dismiss and repudiate and divorce one's wife for any and every cause?

I believe this commandment is a strong law to help protect spouses during difficult times to bond together, help the vulnerable circumstances that affect one or the other, in order to maintain and overcome any crisis they may face during life. This also keeps families together. We must realize how a divorce affects so many others by breaking up a family. We as adults need to be very cautious and pray to God for guidance to prevent any separation if at all possible..
