In His incarnation Jesus descended from Heaven to earth; in His crucifixion He further descended from earth to Hades; in His resurrection He ascended from Hades to the earth; and in His ascension He ascended back to Heaven. Through such an infinite journey He cut the way that “He might fill all things” (Eph 4:10). We are repeatedly beckoned to identify ourselves with these historical and redemptive acts of Christ. “Crucified with Him... Buried with Him... Seated above with Him” (Rom 6:3; Eph 2:6). Every spiritual blessing is ours because of this identification (Eph 1:3). Psalmist David sang this profound truth prophetically; “You have ascended on High... You have received gifts for men... that the Lord God might dwell there! Blessed be the Lord who daily loads us with benefits!” (Psa 68:18,19). The greatest benefit of the descent and ascent of Christ is the liberation of captive souls.“He led captivity captive” (Eph 4:8). “Glorious liberty!” (Rom 8:21). Let’s study here seven gleaming facets of this liberty we can enjoy. The first and last Old Testament prophecy fulfilled in Ephesians (Eph. 4:8; Ps. 68:18). This was at the ascension, 40 days after His resurrection (Acts 1:3- 11 Lk. 24:51; Mk. 16:19). Three things which Christ did in His ascension: 1. He liberated the righteous immortal souls from captivity in the lower parts of the earth (Eph. 4:8; Ps. 68:18). 2. He took these captives captive to heaven (Eph. 4:8; Ps. 68:18). 3. He gave gifts to men (Eph. 4:8, 11). The captives that were taken to heaven with Christ were the saints who had died from Abel to Christ (which includes King David) and who were held captive by Satan in paradise under the earth until Christ conquered death, hell, and the grave liberating them (Heb. 2:14- 15 Lk. 16:23). He got these captives in the lower parts of the earth (Eph. 4:8- 10 Mt. 12:40). They were still alive in soul and spirit since their physical death, but held captive, which proves the immortality of the soul. He could not have led captive, extinct souls. Now when a Christian dies he does not go into the lower parts of the earth to be held captive, but goes to heaven to live and await the resurrection of the body (2Cor. 5:8; Php. 1:21- 24 Heb. 12:22- 23 Rev. 6:9- 11). Acts 2:34 says, "David is not ascended into the heavens".This refers to David's body in resurrection, not to his soul and spirit which are in heaven (Heb. 12:23; Eph. 4:8- 10 2Cor. 5:8; Php. 1:21- 24) To summarize, David's body is in earth and his soul and spirit are in heaven waiting to be resurrected upon rapture of Christ.

The Bible states in Acts 2.29 that “Brothers, I can speak confidently to you about our forefather David, that he both died and was buried, and his tomb is with us to this day." NET He is not with the Lord in heaven. Ps 115.17 "The dead do not praise the LORD, nor do any of those who descend into the silence of death." Ecc 9.5 "the dead do not know anything"; He is buried in his tomb awaiting Jesus second coming for the resurrection John 14: 1-3 to be with Him. It is only when Christ appear in the clouds that all believers will be taken up to be with Him. Heb 9:27-28 "And inasmuch as it is appointed for men to die once and after this comes judgment, 28 so Christ also, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time for salvation without reference to sin, to those who eagerly await Him."NASB After a person die the next thing to happen is judgment than Christ appear a second time for those who awaiting Him. David awaits Christ second coming in his grave.

Well, if you look at Hebrews 11:32, you can use whatever version you desire, but the KJV is the most accurate in relation to the original Bible. This verse talks about David. That may seem rather irrelevant to answering your question, but it is indeed very relevant. Skip over to verse 13 of the same chapter, Hebrews 11. It reads, "These all died in faith, not having received the promises,". So to answer your question in a nutshell, David is dead in the grave and awaiting Christ's return in which he will be resurrected and he will see his promised seed that would reign on his throne forever, as described in 2 Samuel 7.

I do not think anyone would be able to tell us theologically what really happens to the dead. The great preacher Solomon tells us, dust would go back to dust, and the spirit back to god who gave it. What about the person who died, where does he go? The bible in Genesis 2 :7 tells us after God made the man out of dust he breathed into him and "then" man became a living soul. Mankind is a mixture of the breath of God and dust of the earth. The combination of dust and breath brought forth a "soul".This is why Solomon says what comes from the earth goes back and what comes from God goes back... When Jesus comes again with your breath it gives life to a dead body and your body is resurrected and you once again become a living soul. Presently what happens to the dead person,...his Soul...as Jesus said concerning Lazarus, he is asleep. This means your soul sleeps waiting for the resurrection. Even if one say the dead would be in Heaven....can we ask in what form? We know Jesus is sitting on the right hand with a resurrected body. This is why all the patriarchs are waiting for the coming of the Christ....for their bodies to be changed, because flesh and blood cannot enter the kingdom of God. May I also give a word of caution? Those bodies that would be changed are those who have accepted and followed the Christ wholly. As the the scriptures tell us "there is no condemnation for those that are in Christ, who walk 'not after the flesh,' but in the spirit." The lord knows those that are his....I urge every reader to live a life that is worthy of his is calling, because there is no uncertainty concerning the certainty of death...it is inevitable..there is no escape.
