How much did the disciples actually know about Christ's crucifixion and resurrection before it happened?

Matthew 10:2-9 tells of Jesus choosing, commissioning and sending his disciples out to preach. How is it that much later after telling them he would be delivered to men (Luke 9:44), verse 45 states they did not understand what this meant, that it was hidden from them? What had they been preaching?
