The Book of Numbers is the fourth book of the Bible and part of the Pentateuch (Torah), written by Moses. It records Israel’s journey from Mount Sinai to the plains of Moab, just before entering the Promised Land. The book details census counts, laws, wilderness wanderings, and key events that shaped Israel’s relationship with God. These are 2 of the key passages: Numbers 13-14: The Spies and Israel’s Rebellion Numbers 13: Moses sends 12 spies to explore Canaan. Ten bring back a fearful report, doubting they can take the land, while Joshua and Caleb urge trust in God. Numbers 14: Israel rebels, refusing to enter Canaan. As punishment, God decrees that this generation will wander in the wilderness for 40 years until they die, and only Joshua and Caleb will enter the Promised Land. Numbers 22-24: Balaam and His Prophecies Numbers 22: The Moabite king Balak hires Balaam, a pagan prophet, to curse Israel. On the way, Balaam's donkey speaks when an angel blocks the path. Numbers 23-24: Instead of cursing Israel, Balaam delivers four prophecies of blessing, including a Messianic prophecy in Numbers 24:17, foretelling a coming ruler from Israel: “A star shall come out of Jacob, and a scepter shall rise out of Israel” (ESV).
