Why do Israelites practice Judaism and not Christianity?

If Israel is a country/nation so important in Christianity, why do Israelites practice Judaism, and not Christianity? A vast majority of Jews don't believe in Jesus being the Messiah, and therefore, are not saved. So, why is Israel so important if they are not a Christian nation?
