Naming was a very significant event all throughout the Bible and often indicated a change of calling or direction in someone's life. Matthew Henry's Commentary says this about Adam naming his wife "Eve":

"God named the man, and called him Adam, which signifies red earth; Adam named the woman, and called her Eve, that is, life. Adam bears the name of the dying body, Eve of the living soul. Adam probably had regard to the blessing of a Redeemer, the promised Seed, in calling his wife Eve, or life; for He should be the life of all believers, and in Him all the families of the earth should be blessed."

In Genesis 2, the language seems to indicate that only Adam was named. The two together are referred to as "the man and his wife" and Adam here calls Eve "woman" when she is presented to him for the first time. "Woman" in the original language seems to indicate simply that she was his opposite and his wife.

While we are not specifically told when Adam and Eve received their names and why, reading through Genesis would indicate that Eve received her name as a result of the fall, which we read about in Genesis 3. It would seem logical that she received this name at that time since this event marked a significant change in the course of her life, as well as Adam's. Her name gave Adam hope for the future, that although they had brought death upon themselves, she would bring forth life, and eventually a Savior from death would come from their union.

Eve is not addressed as a separate person until after the Fall.... but there are more significant mysteries to unravel from this. Man and wife become Adam and Eve, a division of that perfect unity we are now called back to where in marriage two become one. They nolonger behave in unity vertically with God and horizontally with each other. They quarrel, Eve manipulates and Adam blames his wife. Eve who agrees that her independence to choose right from wrong would bring Divine wisdom, she simply wanted to be more like her beloved God (where do we hear THAT today, WWJD and the heresy of wanting just to be like Jesus) perhaps with self justification could not see what she had done wrong. Adam who loved God and had not done the wrong, nevertheless loved this woman SO much that he deliberately chose to join with her in disobedience, to stick with her no-matter what. Why then call her Eve, not retain the perfect unity of body and soul they had known. Because they knew the trust between them and the Father was broken. Like CS Lewis says, they were now self aware, walking alongside themselves

The devil deceived Eve, Adam joined her,the 3 of them participate in the fall.That is why God addressed the  3 of them about the future sufferings.  The man called his wife's name Eve, because she was the mother of all living. And the Lord God made for Adam and for his wife garments of skins and clothed them.  I will put enmity between you and the woman,
and between your offspring and  her offspring;
HE shall bruise your head,
and you shall bruise HIS heel." This is God's Plan of our  salvation .
