The Millennial Kingdom is not a literal thousand year reign. It is a mistake to think that Jesus Christ will have a literal, thousand-year-long, physical reign on the earth sometime in the future. As with all the symbols in The Book of Revelation, the thousand years is a figurative picture in the same way that the dragon, beast, harlot, Babylon, seven candlesticks, etc. Are all figurative. The book of revelation should not be read superficially. 

The thousand years mentioned in Revelation 20:4-6 is symbolic, and not a literal period of time. Christ's reign during the millennium is spiritual and has already begun. (Luke 17:21) It started with his first coming and will end with his second coming. We are in the millennial kingdom now, which is the age of the church. After this age, Christ will return in final judgment and establish a permanent reign in the new heaven and new earth.

So in answer to the question: the millennial kingdom is a picture of the age of the church and that is happening right now.

If you read the book of revelation correctly, you will see that now is definitely not the millennium, that period is described as a period of peace and it clearly states that those who fought against Jerusalem and make it through the tribulation period, will annually pay homeage by visiting Jerusalem to worship God. None of the very blatantly described events are taking place on earth currently. To God be all Glory!

Do to space & time I am not going to quote Scripture, however I will note where it is found in Scripture,
First let me ask, can you imagine being John on the Isle of Patmos, hearing "Come up hither,..." & the next thing he knows is he is in very Throne Room of God? If that doesn't wow anyone, how about this: he begins to hear & see all these things & is to record them into a Book. John had to use symbolism, allegories & the like because he had never seen anything in his life that would prepare him to view the world we live in today, the weapons that were being used- he recorded as accurately, through the guidance of the HolySpirit as he possibly could.

The original question was if we should take the millennial reign of Christ literally. A great use of thumb is to always take the Bible literally unless it makes it clear that it is otherwise.

I'd like to start with the pretribulation Rapture of the Church or The Bride of Christ. I will give around 6 differences in the Rapture of the Church & the @nd Coming of Jesus Christ. Again i could give you many more but for the sake of space & time I will only elaborate on a few. 2Timothy 2:15 ".......rightly dividing the Word of truth." The entirety of the NT is not written solely to Christains. Then we have Peter & the disciples commissioned by Jesus while he was on earth. Peter basicallly took the message of the golspel to the Jews. Paul, on the other hand was commissioned by Jesus (in heaven) in the dessert for 3 years & he took the gospel to the gentiles. Paul is also the one that Jesus gave the "mystery of the Rapture" to, in 1st Corinthians chapter 15. The last 7 years on this earth as we know it will be God dealing with Israel again - the Dipensation Of Grace or the Church Age is over the second the Rapture occurs. The Bible speaks of 2 events: "The Day of Christ" & is to be looked forward to. The 2nd is "The Day Of The Lord" is the 2nd coming & is to be greatly feared.
(1)- the Rapture is the "blessed hope"-Titus 2:13 a day of great joy.
In Amos 5:18 it is referring to the Day of the Lord which is indeed the 2nd coming of Christ to this earth & recorded there it is a say of sorrow, great woes, & greatly to be feared. Joel 3 tells more on the ferocity & woefulness of the 2nd Coming.
Paul calls the Rapture the "Day of Christ" which is to be looked forward to.

Titus 2:13 is speaking of the Rapture
2nd Thessalonians 2:2 =Rapture
Amos 5:18 says the "day of the Lord" is darkness & not light = the 2nd Coming
Isaiah 13:9. = the 2nd Coming

(2). In the Rapture the Church is taken UP to heaven - the 2nd Coming He brings the "church" back with Him. 1st Thessalonians 4:13-18 (Rapture)
Revelation 19:24 = 2nd Coming (Only the Church or the BRIDE of Christ is ever said to be clothed in fine white linen. The world has been going through 7 years of the Great Tribulation & Jesus with us following Him is headed to save Israel & destroy all her enemies.

(3) At the Rapture the Bridegroom, Jesus - comes to take His bride. Jesus took all of our sins & sorrows upon Himself, we are covered by the blood of Christ & His Bride will certainly not be left here to endure the horror of the Tribulation. 
Although Matthew is written from the point of Jesus being a Jew & in Chapter 24 He is telling the disciples what it will be like for them (Israel) because she did not accept Him as Messiah.......the ONLY time Jesus even remotely speaks of the rapture is in John 14- " In my Fathers house are many mansions........i will come again & receive you unto myself that where I am there you may be also" this is the Rapture
Rev 20:4 = 2nd Coming
Closing with this one because of remaining characters.

(4)At the Rapture Believers are given a Glorified Body- the 2nd Coming they remain in their earthly bodies & enter the Millineal Kingdom
1000 years of peace with Christ reining in Jerusalem. Satan bound for 1000 yrs-time of peace. Those who come out of tribulation however must make their choice for Christ!
