"See, I am coming soon, and My reward is with Me,
to repay all according to their deeds" (Rev 22:12)

Sadly the Second Coming of Christ is not much talked about even in the so-called spiritual circles of Christendom. Whether we trust Him or not, whether we expect His return or not, His coming is certain. No one will know when He would return. Only the Father in Heaven knows the time (Mt 24:36). But He will come "as a thief," meaning, at the most unexpected time. When we go about with our business as usual, thinking that Christ will not come now, He may suddenly arrive! (Rev 22:20).

One wonders why Christ should return. The primary purpose is to take His people to the eternal Home! How sweet! He wants us to be where He is (Jn 14:3). Not only that, He wants to reward the deeds of those who have walked in obedience to Him, and to judge those who have rejected Him (Psa 96:13).

The signs of Second Coming are appearing one after the other. One important sign is that "the love of many will grow cold" (Mt 24:12). There also arises a question whether genuine faith on God and His Son would prevail. Jesus Himself asked, "When the Son of Man comes back, will He find faith in the world?" (Lk 18:8). There's widespread departure from faith and the denial of it. False doctrines are flooded everywhere (2 Tim 3:13; Jude 18; 2 Pet 3:3,4).

However, on the positive side, we are witnessing an unprecedented outpouring of the Holy Spirit, in accordance to the prophecy of Joel, "In the last days, I will pour out of My Spirit on all flesh" (Joel 2:28,29). The Church growth is faster now than anytime in history. 75000 men and women are added to the Church everyday. Even in the Communistic China there's a daily addition of 30000 to the Church. Yes, "whoever" calls on the Name of the Lord is getting saved (Acts 2:21). On our part, we must keep growing in holiness as we await the Return of Christ (1 Jn 3:1-3), stay watchful in prayer (Lk 21:36), active in soulwinning and evangelism (Lk 19:13; Mt 24:14,46). Charles Spurgeon (1834-1892), known as the Prince of Preachers, pointed out, "The fact that Jesus Christ is to come again is not a reason for stargazing, but for working in the power of the Holy Spirit!"

Jesus said He will return. John 14:3 "If I go away and prepare a place for you, I will come back and receive you to Myself, so that where I am you may be also."
Angels testified as to His return. Acts 1:11 "The said, 'Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking up into heaven? This Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come in the same way that you have seen Him going into heaven.'"

Simply put, the second coming of Christ has a purpose clearly spelt out in the scriptures, viz, to save the righteous and destroy the wicked!

This he would perform by his God-given authority as the King, or head, or Ruler of God's government, called the kingdom of God, that will take full control of the world, Daniel 2:44; 7:13-14; Revelation 11:15.

That world government under Christ will usher in an era of good government, peace, righteousness and justice on earth, Isaiah 9:6-7.

Not only that, God, through Jesus as his Representative as Ruler, will stop sickness, pain, sorrow, even death, on earth and those who are adjudged worthy will live for ever, Revelation 21:2-4

This is really the good news that Jesus was sent by God to declare to the world during his first coming, Matthew 3:17; Luke 4:42-44; 8:1. That also was the core of the message that Jesus ordered his followers to preach throughout the world until the end (that is, his second coming), Matthew 24:14, Mark 13:10.

In other words, the second coming of Jesus will be to remove the " first heaven and the first earth", and replace them with the "new heaven and the new earth", Revelation 21:1-2.

The righteous are those
- who accepted him as their lord and saviour, John 3:16, Revelation 7:13-14

-who obeyed his commandments

-who " held on to the skirt of a man who is a Jew" and followed him to worship God with spirit and truth", Zechariah 8:23; Revelation 2:2,9

-who were adjudged by Jesus to have helped " his brothers", Matthew 25:31-40.

-who have obeyed the admonition to "get out of her, my people", Revelation 18:4. The " her" refers to the great whore, Babylon the great, symbolising the world empire of false religion.

-whose worship of God is not in vain, in line with Matthew 15:7-9, " Ye hypocrites, well did Esaias prophesy of you, saying, This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me. But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men (Matthew 15:7 - 15:9 KJV).

In summary, the second coming of Christ is to establish pure worship of God on the earth, in line with the original purpose of God in creating the earth and man, viz, to fill the earth with peaceful, righteous, happy, godly and undying human kind. This purpose was truncated by Adam's disobedience to God' sinstruction in the Garden of Eden.

Matthew 24:3: And as he sat upon the mount of Olives, the disciples came unto him privately, saying, Tell us, when shall these things be? And what shall be the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the world?

Lord Jesus, when He went out and departed from the temple, He sat upon the Mount of Olives. His disciples came to Him to ask about the time of the end of the world. He then revealed unto His disciples who sat with Him on the Mount of Olives, and said, “As the days of Noah were, so shall be the coming of the Son of man be.” (Mat 24:37) The just man Noah, who walked with God the Father, was led to make the ark of go’-pher wood, he and his family were saved when the floods of water were upon the earth. (Gen 6:9,14) Many shall come in my name and shall deceive many, you shall hear of wars and rumors of war, for nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There shall be famines, pestilences, and earthquakes in diverse places; this shall be the beginning of sorrows, as we see today around the world. (Mat 24:6-7) E’-noch, the just man, walked with God, and God the Father took him, during this time, for the elect’s sake, those days shall be shortened. One who then knows how to possess his vessel in sanctification through repentance shall then be taken up in the cloud for the rapture. (Gen 5:24/1 Thes 4:4,16-17)

The end times of the world that shall begin is for one to discern, who are left behind, as the scriptures reveal unto us, as the Lord Jesus said, "That will be the beginning of sorrows. (Mat 24:8,40-41) Then there shall be many who shall be offended and shall betray one another, hating one another, through the false prophets, false teachers." For this shall be then the latter times, who shall depart from faith, giving heed to seducing spirits having doctrines of devils. Speaking lies in hypocrisy, having their conscience seared with a hot iron. (Mat 24:11/2 Pet 2:1/1 Tim 4:1-2) Those who are left behind then need to watch and be sober, let no man deceive you, for the falling away shall come the son of perdition, sitting in the temple and shewing himself that he is God. (1 Thes 5:6/2 Thes 2:3-4) For then, for the Lord Jesus second coming, to come and stand on the earth shall come to pass. For He shall then send at first, His two witnesses, who had come, and stood before our Lord Jesus, Moses and Elijah, and God the Father said, “This is my beloved Son, listen to Him.” (Mat 17:3,5)

These two witnesses, Moses and Elijah, will be given the power to prophesy a thousand two hundred and threescore days, clothed in sackcloth. This prophecy shall be for repentance for the left over, if any man will hurt them, fire shall proceed out of their mouth and shall devour their enemies, if any man hurt them in the same manner shall be killed. When they shall finish their testimony, the beast shall ascend and make war against them and then kill them. (Rev 11:3-7) For then these seducing spirits, having the doctrines of the devil, shall then come to pass the abomination of desolation, who shall “stand in the holy place,” spoken of by the prophet Daniel. He shall enforce the small and great, the rich and the poor, the free and the bond to receive a mark in their right hand or in their foreheads. (2 Thes 2:4/Rev 13:16) For then the wrath of God shall come upon the earth who have taken the mark of the beast and shall be gathered together to battle of that great day of God Almighty, at Ar-ma-ged’-don. For the Lord Jesus, shall then go and fight against those nations, “for His feet shall stand on that day on the mount of Olives.” (Rev 16:2,14,16/Zec 14:2-5)

Job 19:25-26: For I know that my redeemer liveth, and that he shall stand at the latter day upon the earth: And though after my skin worms destroy this body, yet in my flesh shall I see God. Matthew 5:8: Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.

The Second Coming of Christ, also known as the Second Advent or Parousia (a Greek term -- παρουσία (parousia) -- meaning "arrival" or "presence"), is the promised return of Jesus Christ to earth in glory after His ascension to heaven. This event is a central hope in biblical prophecy, offering great encouragement to believers as it completes God's redemptive plan and brings history to its ultimate climax.

The Bible is filled with references to this event. One scholar has estimated that there are 1,845 references to Christ’s second coming in the Old Testament, where 17 books give it prominence. In the 260 chapters of the New Testament, there are 318 references to the second advent of Christ--an amazing 1 out of every 30 verses. Twenty-three of the 27 New Testament books refer to this great event. For every prophecy in the Bible concerning Christ’s first advent, there are 8 which look forward to His second (Today in the Word, April 1989, p. 27).

The New Testament uses several key terms to describe this return: Parousia (emphasizing a regal arrival after absence, as in Matthew 24:3,27,37,39; 1 Thessalonians 4:15; 1 Corinthians 15:23); Epiphaneia ("manifestation" or "appearing," as in 2 Thessalonians 2:8; 1 Timothy 6:14; Titus 2:13); Apokalupsis ("revelation," as in 1 Corinthians 1:7; 2 Thessalonians 1:7; 1 Peter 1:7,13); and phrases like the "Day of the Lord" or "that day" (as in 1 Thessalonians 5:2; 2 Thessalonians 2:2; 1 Corinthians 1:8) (International Standard Bible Encyclopedia [ISBE], "Parousia"; ISBE, "Eschatology of the New Testament, V. The Parousia").

Christ's return will be personal, visible, and glorious. He will come on the clouds with great power, attended by angels, and every eye will see Him (Matthew 24:30; Revelation 1:7; Mark 13:26; Luke 21:27). It will be sudden and unexpected for unbelievers--like lightning flashing across the sky (Matthew 24:27; Luke 17:24; 1 Thessalonians 5:2-3)--yet believers are urged to watch and live in readiness. A sign of the Son of Man will appear beforehand, and Christ will return as conquering King to judge the living and the dead, defeat evil (including the Antichrist), resurrect the righteous, renew creation, and establish His eternal kingdom of righteousness and peace (Matthew 24:30-31; 25:31-46; 2 Thessalonians 1:7; Revelation 19:11-16; Romans 8:21; Revelation 21:1) (ISBE, "Parousia"; ISBE, "Eschatology of the New Testament, V. The Parousia").

This event is preceded by various signs and developments: wars, famines, earthquakes, the great tribulation, false christs and prophets, the preaching of the gospel to all nations, cosmic disturbances, the rise of the Antichrist, and--in some passages--the conversion of Israel. These precursors, often called the "woes of the Messiah," signal the approaching end, though the exact timing remains known only to God (Matthew 24:36; Mark 13:32); Luke 21; Romans 11:25-26; 2 Thessalonians 2; Revelation; ISBE, "Eschatology of the New Testament, V. The Parousia").

The Second Coming stands in sharp contrast to Christ's first coming. His first advent was humble--born in Bethlehem, living as a servant, and dying for sins (Isaiah 53; 1 John 5:20; 2 John 1:7). His second will be triumphant, fulfilling promises of a reigning King who brings judgment on evil, gathers the elect, and ushers in everlasting righteousness (Acts 1:11; 3:20-21; Hebrews 9:28; M. G. Easton, Illustrated Bible Dictionary, 1893, p. 155).

Above all, this truth inspires hope, calls believers to holy living, and assures them of God's faithfulness and final victory over sin, death, and evil. The sheer volume of prophecy about Christ's return--highlighted by biblical statistics--underscores its importance and encourages Christians to look forward eagerly to "the blessed hope" of His appearing (Titus 2:13; Hebrews 9:28) (ISBE, "Parousia"). bible.org & grok assist
