"See, I am coming soon, and My reward is with Me,
to repay all according to their deeds" (Rev 22:12)

Sadly the Second Coming of Christ is not much talked about even in the so-called spiritual circles of Christendom. Whether we trust Him or not, whether we expect His return or not, His coming is certain. No one will know when He would return. Only the Father in Heaven knows the time (Mt 24:36). But He will come "as a thief," meaning, at the most unexpected time. When we go about with our business as usual, thinking that Christ will not come now, He may suddenly arrive! (Rev 22:20).

One wonders why Christ should return. The primary purpose is to take His people to the eternal Home! How sweet! He wants us to be where He is (Jn 14:3). Not only that, He wants to reward the deeds of those who have walked in obedience to Him, and to judge those who have rejected Him (Psa 96:13).

The signs of Second Coming are appearing one after the other. One important sign is that "the love of many will grow cold" (Mt 24:12). There also arises a question whether genuine faith on God and His Son would prevail. Jesus Himself asked, "When the Son of Man comes back, will He find faith in the world?" (Lk 18:8). There's widespread departure from faith and the denial of it. False doctrines are flooded everywhere (2 Tim 3:13; Jude 18; 2 Pet 3:3,4).

However, on the positive side, we are witnessing an unprecedented outpouring of the Holy Spirit, in accordance to the prophecy of Joel, "In the last days, I will pour out of My Spirit on all flesh" (Joel 2:28,29). The Church growth is faster now than anytime in history. 75000 men and women are added to the Church everyday. Even in the Communistic China there's a daily addition of 30000 to the Church. Yes, "whoever" calls on the Name of the Lord is getting saved (Acts 2:21). On our part, we must keep growing in holiness as we await the Return of Christ (1 Jn 3:1-3), stay watchful in prayer (Lk 21:36), active in soulwinning and evangelism (Lk 19:13; Mt 24:14,46). Charles Spurgeon (1834-1892), known as the Prince of Preachers, pointed out, "The fact that Jesus Christ is to come again is not a reason for stargazing, but for working in the power of the Holy Spirit!"

Jesus said He will return. John 14:3 "If I go away and prepare a place for you, I will come back and receive you to Myself, so that where I am you may be also."
Angels testified as to His return. Acts 1:11 "The said, 'Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking up into heaven? This Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come in the same way that you have seen Him going into heaven.'"

Simply put, the second coming of Christ has a purpose clearly spelt out in the scriptures, viz, to save the righteous and destroy the wicked!

This he would perform by his God-given authority as the King, or head, or Ruler of God's government, called the kingdom of God, that will take full control of the world, Daniel 2:44; 7:13-14; Revelation 11:15.

That world government under Christ will usher in an era of good government, peace, righteousness and justice on earth, Isaiah 9:6-7.

Not only that, God, through Jesus as his Representative as Ruler, will stop sickness, pain, sorrow, even death, on earth and those who are adjudged worthy will live for ever, Revelation 21:2-4

This is really the good news that Jesus was sent by God to declare to the world during his first coming, Matthew 3:17; Luke 4:42-44; 8:1. That also was the core of the message that Jesus ordered his followers to preach throughout the world until the end (that is, his second coming), Matthew 24:14, Mark 13:10.

In other words, the second coming of Jesus will be to remove the " first heaven and the first earth", and replace them with the "new heaven and the new earth", Revelation 21:1-2.

The righteous are those
- who accepted him as their lord and saviour, John 3:16, Revelation 7:13-14

-who obeyed his commandments

-who " held on to the skirt of a man who is a Jew" and followed him to worship God with spirit and truth", Zechariah 8:23; Revelation 2:2,9

-who were adjudged by Jesus to have helped " his brothers", Matthew 25:31-40.

-who have obeyed the admonition to "get out of her, my people", Revelation 18:4. The " her" refers to the great whore, Babylon the great, symbolising the world empire of false religion.

-whose worship of God is not in vain, in line with Matthew 15:7-9, " Ye hypocrites, well did Esaias prophesy of you, saying, This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me. But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men (Matthew 15:7 - 15:9 KJV).

In summary, the second coming of Christ is to establish pure worship of God on the earth, in line with the original purpose of God in creating the earth and man, viz, to fill the earth with peaceful, righteous, happy, godly and undying human kind. This purpose was truncated by Adam's disobedience to God' sinstruction in the Garden of Eden.
