We were born with a sinful nature. It is "soulish," that is, consists of mind, will and emotions. That's where negative thoughts come from. Those of us who have been born again are inhabited by the Holy Spirit. We have --- rather, He is --- the ability to take every negative thought captive, inserting Spiritual, God-worthy thoughts instead.
In my opinion, to "take every thought captive," we must be like Paul who did not depend upon the tactics of this world (2 Co 10:2-3). But what he did do (and thereby leaving US an example) was that he used God's mighty weapons to knock down Satan's strongholds (2 Co 10:4-6). See Harold Wilmington's alliterated outline of 2 Corinthians for more. I especially love verse 4: For the weapons of our warfareare not of the flesh but have divine power to destroy strongholds. 5 We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ,
