I have always been taught that when Jesus died, he went to hell, not the hell we usually think of, but a place called Abraham's Bosom where people who died before the ability for Jesus death to be their sacrifice for sin and thus eternal life. Jesus then sent their souls to heaven. Maybe some people think we rest in paradise before entering heaven, in order to be judged with everyone who goes after Jesus comes again!
