In Jewish thought, to be the son of something meant to be of the same nature or essence as that thing. This notion probably goes all the way back to creation, where God established that every living creature reproduces “after its kind.” If a horse has a son, that son is a horse. If a dog has a son, that son is a dog. If a bird has a son, that son is a bird. If a man has a son (as I do), that son is human (as my son is, usually). There are biblical examples of people who were given nicknames that described their nature. Why were James and John called “sons of thunder?” Was it because their dad, Zebedee, was a thunderous guy? No! It was because they were thunderous fellows. Barnabas was called “son of encouragement.” Was that because his dad was very encouraging? No, Barnabas was the great encourager. To be the son of something meant to be of the same quality or essence as that thing. One of Jesus’ favorite names for himself was “Son of Man.” Nearly all scholars understand this to mean that Jesus was identifying with mankind. He was a genuine human being. That was important, for it qualified him to be our substitute and die for us (Hebrews 2:17). Even liberal theologians will usually agree that the phrase “Son of Man” means Jesus was a real man. Unfortunately, many are inconsistent when interpreting the phrase “Son of God.” But to the Jewish mind, to be the “Son of God” meant to be of the same quality, nature and essence as God, or in other words, to be divine. This was clear to the Jewish opponents of Jesus. John 5:17-18 says, “Jesus said to them, ‘My Father is always at his work to this very day, and I, too, am working.’ For this reason the Jews tried all the harder to kill him; not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God.” (See also John 10:36). They fully understood that if a snake has a son, that son is a snake, and if a fish has a son, that son is a fish, and if God has a Son, that Son is divine, of the same quality, nature and essence as his Father. He is also God. Therefore, when the Bible refers to Jesus as the Son of God, it means Jesus is God. So, when some people argue and say, “Jesus is not God, but only the son of God,” they do not understand how the Bible uses the notion of “son.” Jesus is the Son of God, and that means he is also God.

This is a title of Jesus. It implies His deity (John 5:18) because the title is one of equality with God. (Source unknown) “Therefore the Jews sought the more to kill him, because he not only had broken the sabbath, but said also that God was his Father, making himself equal with God.” (Jn 5:18) It may be questioned whether it was blasphemy merely to claim to be the Messiah, but it was rank and undeniable blasphemy to claim to be the Son of God. This recalls the statement in Jn 5:18, "The Jews sought the more to kill him, because he not only brake the sabbath, but also called God his own Father, making himself equal with God"; to which may be added (Jn 10:33), "The Jews answered him, For a good work we stone thee not, but for blasphemy; and because that thou, being a man, makest thyself God." The strongest and most frequent suggestions as to what is implied in Sonship are to be found in the deeds attributed to the Son; for these are far beyond the competence of any mere man.
